Introduction Welcome to the National Basketball Sim Association (NBSA). The ink is barely dry on your three-year contract to serve as a team’s head coach and general manager, but there is much to cover in this league, and this short info sheet will serve as just the beginning. While serving your dual role as the head of the team’s coaching staff and front office, you will have full autonomy over the team’s lineups and rosters. However, since you are working for the team’s former “NBA” owner, how you choose to build the team’s roster – i.e. spend money – will be up to you, but it will have to done so in adherence to your owner’s willingness to pay the league’s luxury tax, and unfortunately, most owners loathe the idea of doing so. The NBSA picks up after the conclusion of the NBA 2011-12 season, and although it is its own individual entity, it will heavily follow the rules of the current NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Building Your Roster The roster disclosed on the league’s information workbook is your team’s roster to start out with. Entry Draft First, the league will hold an Entry Draft for incoming rookies. Every team’s draft picks have been reset so at the moment every team holds all of its own first and second round picks Amnesty The league has allocated two (2) amnesty provisions to each NBLA franchise. These amnesty provisions clear salaries off the team’s books for salary and cap purposes. One provision may only be used before the start of the upcoming free agent period. The other may be used in any other seasons up until the 2015-16 season. These provisions may only be used on players who have NBA-made contracts and are currently on your team’s roster. Free Agency Free agency is a complex process, and it is important for general managers to be familiar with the rules of the league’s CBA as they pertain to player contracts. For any assistance, please don’t hesitate to ask league administration. In terms of the free agent process, it must be stressed that the league will not engage in a belabored negotiating process. Teams’ initial offers will stand until the player’s representation decides, if they decide, to come back and negotiate. Our advice to you is to be calculating and try to put your best foot forward with your offer, if you are intending to make an offer to a player, not just express interest. Ultimately, free agent decisions will be made based off a variety of factors, not just money. Your Job Given that you are on a three-year contract with your organization, it is not a guarantee that you will always have a job with that particular organization. The only grounds for being terminated are 1) inactivity and 2) mismanaging the team’s payroll. If you are able to avoid those two things, you will have job security in the NBLA. Inevitably, there will be opportunities for advancement, if gm’s of organizations with high expectations are unable to deliver. Those who are doing well will be offered extensions from their clubs, in addition to, interest from other organizations. Following The League You can follow the league here, of course, and I will also be using twitter for rumors of all those "deal's coming soon".
