https://gofund.me/9e78a6d4 “Hey everybody. Nice seeing you again.” If you watched Portland TV news in the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s, you’ll remember that nightly greeting from Ed Whelan, one of the most memorable and best-liked sports personalities in Portland broadcast history. Since then, Ed has run into some tough times. Several years ago, he suffered a stroke. His health has steadily deteriorated ever since. Now he has to use a walker to get around. Living on social security/modest earnings from a part-time job (he's a dispatcher at a towing company) and with his mobility on the decline, he wasn’t able to take care of regular house maintenance. As a result, the house now needs a significant number of repairs to get it into shape for sale. That includes new flooring, new siding, a complete kitchen remodel and new bathroom fixtures. The goal is to pull whatever equity he can from the sale to provide some financial cushion for the coming years. Ed recently made the decision to move out of the house and into an assisted living facility where he could get the care he needs. On his second day there, Ed’s motorized scooter was stolen. While his spirits are high and he says he’s excited about entering “the fourth quarter” of his life, “The Big Daddy of Sports” could really use your help to buy a new scooter, take care of his assisted living rent and medical bills and pay for the repair of his house to prepare it for sale. Any donation is appreciated. Please pass this along to any of Ed's fans. Thanks!
Ed! Used to watch him all the time. Hope he gets everything and more he needs from the go fund me. A very deserving person. I hope the community he served for many years is willing to lend a hand. Can't believe his scooter got stolen at a retirement home. How does that happen? Anyways, sending the best vibes his way.
Ed Whelan, Steve Arena, Ron Carlson, David Apple, Jim Bosley, Jack Capell, Jim Little, Ken Boddie, Mike Donahue, Teresa Richardson, Paul Linnman, Eric Schmidt, Jim Donovan...I know they're not all sports people, but they're all the people a lot of us grew up with.
I was once the recipient of The Burnt Biscuit Award for a big screen appearance. Grew up watching Ed. Damn this sucks, nice work @julius getting this out there. Going to share this for sure.
Oh man, that sounds soooooo familiar. My brain says, The Bos, David Apple or Jim Little. But I'm probably wrong.
Eric Schmidt. Damn that's a name i haven't heard in a long time! I remember him. I remember when I was in 5th or 6th grade and calling into KGW I believe, because I was really into weather, and talked with Matt Zaffino for 15 minutes. I'll never forget that and Zaffino is forever goated for talking to some young punk kid about weather. Damn the 90s were awesome.
The only Pat I can think of, who is sports related, is Pat Lafferty. I can't think of any other Pat that was a major player in Portland news/sports broadcasting.
