http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1758167 this deal makes the most sense, a young talent for parcells to groom, but nobody was talking about dallas in the mix, all i heard was oakland, arizona, miami(b4 aj) and i forget the other team but dallas was the dark horse here. henson in MO is a wild card, if he wins i guess thats a bonus considering hes been away from football, hasnt gotten hit in years and def. isnt in football shape. well see, high risk for a playoff team to take on a yound QB over a vet.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (blackadder)</div><div class='quotemain'>Have the Cowboys learned nothing from the Chad Hutchinson experiment?</div> Evidently not BA, but its such a low risk, its worth the chance.
i Think it is a great deal, 3.5 million over 8 years? all they ahve to do is bench him first year, then if he is a first round talent like everyone thinks, gets in shape and learns offense, he could start 2nd year and by 4th year of contract be a potential pro bowler. If he sucks they are out 3.5 million, less than the signing bonus of a 1st round qb.
At the price they paid and with the contract structure they got him to sign, its an exceptional gamble for the Cowboys....
Umm...3rd round picks for QB's that havent played in a game in years, and only played in 7 of them in college, who left the sport to pursue a game with a much smaller, yet harder ball is a gamble, although in this case, the payoff is exponentially greater than the investment involve, and therefore my assesment is that this is an excellent GAMBLE for them...
well said, how can you give 3.5 mill to someone who hasnt played in years? you dont know if hes gonna stink, plus, he only played a few in college. plus theres the age factor.
I want to be on record stating that the acquistion of Drew Henson for a 3rd round pick was a great gamble by the Cowboys, but it is a gamble...the contract he signed is also a huge coup for the Cowboys....at the compensation surrenedered and the contract that he signed, im suprised that every team in the league wasnt interested, unless they know something we dont know....the contract is particularly favorable to the Cowboys if Henson sits for the next year, if he plays less than 15% of the snaps, the deal is 8 years/$3.95 million....thats less than $500k/season on avg, thats a great contract for a starter, a backup, or even the 3rd string QB, and makes him very valuable even if hes not a star, plus hes tradable in the future if it doesnt work out because his cap number is so managable....I read a week ago that Parcells didnt want to take on a rookier passer, but at this price, even the Tuna couldnt resist...

This doesn't sound like the direction they wanted to take. However, it seems apparent that they were not comfortable competing with other teams for the free agents available. They could certainly draft someone, but for the talent level that Henson has (even given his baseball sabbatical), you couldn't draft someone at this price. I do think it says something for what they think of Hutchinson.
