A year ago, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich declared before Game 1 of his team’s first-round playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks that rookie guard George Hill would not figure prominently in his playing rotation.

“These playoffs aren’t for George,” he said then.

On Sunday night at American Airlines Center, Popovich was forced to make the same decision about the second half of Game 1.

Playing on a sore right ankle, a sprain tweaked in Wednesday’s regular-season finale against the Mavericks, Hill went scoreless in 15 minutes, 14 seconds in the first half after starting the game at point guard.

When things went no better in the first 2:31 of the third period, Popovich sat Hill for the remainder of the game.

“I didn’t like what I saw in the first half,” Popovich said. “I gave him a shot there to start the third quarter, and I just thought he wasn’t able to do what we needed to have him do.”

Hill insisted after the game that he had no problems Sunday with his right ankle, initially injured in the Spurs’ victory over the Lakers on April 6.
