How do die hard Yankees fans feel about the current and near future of the club. Are a few down years expected with the eras that have been ending the last couple years? Or a re-tooling via free agency? I assume not a ton in the farm system?
With the steinbrenners and the advent of the 200 plus million payroll there is no such thing as down years. And since the farm continues to blow despite cash man being here forever they will simply continue to open their checkbooks for the free agents they want.
When you are a 3 Billion dollar entity, you never rebuild, it's not the Yankees DNA. Anything from the farm as of late has been limited to relief pitchers and a lot of hope with little to show for it.
The one thing that's for sure is there will be a new identity. Jeter is the last of the mohicans if you will.
That's why Cano got out of Dodge, the leadership would have been his to inherit, I don't think he'd have been able to. I don't know if Jeter will ever own the Yankees but I'd be damn happy to see him buy into the ownership group and keep the eternal flames going. I would hope that the Yankees will improve the farm system.
I think the first step in creating a new farm system would be to clean house of the assholes currently running it.
It has been a very badly neglected system. This is why I've always said Cashman is and never had been a real GM. He's a guy given a blank check year after year.
If they didn't have the budget they have, I'd say piss poor... BUT... they have a budget which can compensate for what is clearly a poorly run farm... The farm seriously needs to be rebuilt as it was with Stick...
