"The longer the Royals keep Eric Hosmer in camp, the harder it could be to send him back to the minors. And if Mitch Maier keeps hitting like this, how does he not get a regular spot in the lineup?

Sure, it's just the first week of spring training. Still…

Hosmer erased a four-run deficit Friday afternoon with a grand slam before Maier continued his white-hot run with an RBI single in a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Surprise Stadium.

Maier now has eight hits and two walks in his last 10 plate appearances over three games. Even Hosmer can't match that - although he is five for eight overall while continuing to flash Gold Glove potential at first base.

"I'm getting good pitches to hit," Maier said, "and they're falling. But how about Hosmer? Holy cow! That was amazing. I thought he hit it through the bullpen wall."

Blaine Hardy got the victory after pitching a one-two-three seventh inning. Jesse Chavez worked a scoreless eighth before Steve Shell recorded the save."
