Eagles are having issues. The local sports radio was talking today on how many years a coach can be effective for the same team - the number being kicked around was like 5 years. Anybody have any thoughts on this or seen this with their favorite team? The show was suggesting Bill Cowher was an exception to the rule.

Bill Belichick seems to field at least a decent team every year since 2000. Some better than others but there weren't any 6-10 or worse seasons in there.

There are so many things going on within a franchise that it is impossible to put a time frame on this. Teams will generally go up and down - with obvious exceptions, some of which were listed above.

The only scenario where I would buy into this theory would be where the relationship between the coach and the management turns stale. When teams are not winning, differing ideas on what to change are common, and can be the beginning of the end.

Usually this debate surrounds a coach and the players, which I do not buy into.

There is no limit to how long a coach can be effective in one place....you need 3 things for a long and successful tenure in one place....1.An owner that understands how hard it is to win in the league, and realizes that some losing is inevitable....2.A personel department that constantly restocks the roster with young talent....3.A real franchise QB....get all 3 and you can build a dynasty....get 2 of the 3 and you can last a long time and win a title or 2....get less than 2 and you are fired within 5 years....thats why its important that a coach gets his money as soon as he can, because theres a lot that isnt under his control....

Where do the fans play into this (if at all)?

They dont....if they ever do, you have no chance to begin with....any owner or head coach that is paying attention to the fans is doomed....

i think that the media definatly has a bit of influence on the owner, maybe not some but i bet the majority of the owners look at what the media says about the team. because really its all about the fans football is a buisness and owners are looking to make money, which gives the fans and media some influence on the teams decisions. not directly but they do have influence

Nothing personal, but the fans don't have anything to do with it. Otherwise the RAIDERS and Packers would never lose. Talk about stupid never say die fans. :stupid:

Yeah. That is what the internet is for... arm-chair QB's, sour grapes, chicken little impersonations, & conspiracy theories.

Didn't think I could work that last one in, did ya?
