I was wondering what anyone's take on the Sports Media was. I mean how much do they really know vs. how much do they spew at us for the purpose of "entertainment"? Watching sports programming on this weekend's games, you get all kinds of predictions. I'm not so sure they really know more than we do as avid NFL fans. How many of these so-called experts picked the Colts on Sunday? Look what happened. This has probably been one of the most unpredictable playoffs, at least in the first round, ever. How many experts went 1-3 on Wild Card Weekend? Don't get me wrong. I enjoy reading and listening to their insight and opinions, but I think we, as fans, have as much grasp on the game as they do. Even with all their easy access to statistics and "homework" they do. Thoughts?
I agree 100% SF...I mean how many times do you find yourself watching a game and you say a stat or something about a play before the commentator does...or how bout you actually get the guys name right the first time..haha for me it seems to happen alot...nevermind the pregame show guys who may know more about the X's and O's than me but when it comes to picking winners they are on the same level as all of us.
Oh man, I do that ALL the time. I'll be watching a game and see a guy hold and call it and about 2 seconds later you see a flag fly across the bottom of the screen. And the commentators will be going, "I wonder what the flag was for?" I mean, c'mon! As for picking the games, I don't believe that they know any more than we do, or that they split their picks to make it seem like a closer game than it will be. And yes, the name thing drives me crazy. Commentators haven't a clue. I guess sometimes you really do see working in football as "just a job". It's beyond me though...
In the movie "Broadcast News" there is a scene in which Albert Brooks is on the phone feeding info to a producer who is feeding it to William Hurt who is anchoring a live news broadcast....whatever Brooks says, the anchor says it shortly after and Brooks says something to the effective of "I say it here, it comes out there"....thats what my wife says when she watches a game with me, because it happens constantly....unless Im watching Monday Night Football, I dont say boom every third word so Im rarely on the same page as Madden....

I too am several seconds ahead of calling what the annoucers & my friends are astounded. If you pay enough attention anyone can determine what did or will happen. I have tried to sit and be the Offensive coordinator for a team I don't normally follow - It was too easy w/ Miami during the vanilla reign - in order to make things interesting.
yea like you watch all the guys on nfl pregames and stuff and it seems that you know more stuff than them. I mean sometimes i just want to shout something at them like YOU IDIOTS UR ABSOLUTELY WRONG. its like talking to a guy who knows less than you about football but you cant talk back. yea i get the same thing with penalties, i catch something on TV and there goes the flag. Then everyone asks what it was and i say it before the ref does and everyone is like whoa. While the announcer is like dumbfounded because he had no clue there was a foul. Also i hate like guys who have never stepped a foot on the football field but are still heralded as experts. Its so stupid. Salisbury he was a failed qb never played but now hes an expert on the game, does that make any sense? they gotta stop the announcers and pick random fans who call the game like people who know what they are doing and say like WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING or THIS TEAM SUCKS. idk i think that'd be more fun
Salsibury did play in 40 NFL games, inluding 4 playoff games, that not exactly a guy who never steeped on a football field....you may not like his analysis, but he is qualified to do the job....and none of that takes into consideration his college career which was good enough to get him drafted....
no well the guy i said to have not stepped on the football field was that John Clayton dude. hes called the Professer i dont understand that. but i mean i knew Salisbury did play but i mean he didnt really do that great in the NFL and now hes an expert on it. I just think thats wierd
I was all set to jump in with comments about Salisbury's (10 years) professional playing days, and his 40 games... Then I read Beef's comment. However, I don't think that he was drafted. As I recall he was an un-drafted free agent. Could be wrong though. As far as his commentary... He is a hard working guy who I think is fairly accurate, but I don't like his delivery. He comes across as a smug 'SC' guy. Not that I have a UCLA bias or anything.
I think the guys that never made it to the NFL are better....Salisbury has that job becuase he was an NFL QB, that gives him a leash that allows him to be worse than Clayton....John Clayton, in my opinion, is the premier NFL analyst....He was a beat writer, so he has a lot of accurate sources and he works the phone like those guys should, hes the best thing going today....
Beef, not to sound like a member of your ever growing(?) fan club, but I agree again. Playing the game doesn't give your more insight than the guy who didn't play the game. Insights are dependent on observation. A successful reporter must be an observer before he can become a commentator. Any 'reporter' or 'commentator' with a ready-made or policy approved opinion to every question (see Jackson on ESPN) isn't reporting or commenting. They are spouting personal opinion disguised as news or reporting. I 'never played the game'. My opinion is either accepted or rejected on its own merits. I consider myself an observer with a (generally) objective viewpoint in many areas of the events of sports and beyond.
