Unlikely as it may be, I figured I'd post some links to commonly used argumentative techniques used in here (and the world at large), in the hopes that people will use them less often. Straw Man: https://effectiviology.com/straw-man-arguments-recognize-counter-use/ Ad Hominem: https://effectiviology.com/ad-hominem-fallacy/ Logical Fallacy: https://effectiviology.com/guide-to-logical-fallacies/ I also found this section to be a useful reminder: Perhaps a mod could sticky this?
You give the average poster on this forum way too much credit. I don't disagree, but can't imagine the posters most likely to use the above would understand or even care why they shouldn't. Skillful debate is a lost art with most people learning that yelling a mantra over and over is more productive than learning to articulate your beliefs. Extra points if you yell the mantra through a megaphone.
I agree with it, but Im not gonna argue about it. Im not. I am NOT!!! This is the world today and I blame social media and media in general. The loudest voice and the one who repeats themselves the most is allowed to take over everything else. Because TV allows the loudest to be broadcast the most, the general public fall in line and think if they are the loudest then they too will be heard the most. And they are not wrong, as unfortunate as it is. The ones who are able to maintain logic in a civil manner, are often fallen upon deaf ears and short term attention spans....
"Pics or it didn't happen." "Learn the game and then post." "But, what about this other player..." "But, 30 years ago..." or "Back in my day..." When you're losing an argument, just bring up something about @HCP 's wife.... "No, @SlyPokerDog , I didn't insult him, I just pointed out that all of the crappiest posts in the entire universe seem to be next to his avatar..." "I'm too good to put someone on ignore." "If you had my understanding of the game..." .....
Nice try, BUT, the logical fallacy here is the notion that the constant culprits in the bickering that goes on come here wanting a civil discussion regarding the Blazers and the NBA. Too many come here wanting all kinds of other things, but the common issue is a need to at all costs be RIGHT!
Some people are in for one hell of a bumpy ride if they think their opinion is the only one that's right or correct. In the meantime, I will laugh my ass off with such free entertainment.
One of my favorite lines all time came from a freshman band player at our local high school some years ago: "I don't NEED to be arrogant!"
Learn the game, then post. Both political parties do it. Message board registration should include an IQ test. Imagine pro wrestling with such a requirement. Fights were better back in the good old days.
