And Howard said yesterday he is convinced that Chris Paul will eventually be an NBA star, too.

"I think he's going to be a great pro," said Howard, a former Wake Forest star now in his second season with the Dallas Mavericks, yesterday in a telephone interview from Portland. "He's got all the tools to make it big.

"No matter where he goes, he's going to be in a good situation because he's going to be thrown into the fire early. He'll learn quickly. He already knows the game, so it'll just be a matter of learning the NBA game."

Paul, Wake Forest's all-America point guard, said yesterday that he would bypass his final two years of eligibility to enter this year's NBA Draft. He's expected to be one of the top picks in the draft, scheduled for June 28.</div>
