Getting beat by a player who will be suspended tomorrow and a pitcher that has no out pitch. If this is major league quality? MLB again in Florida is the San Diego feed, and Gwynn was going off on Hughes's unwillingness to learn and use the 2 seam fastball. One of the reasons he why he was not trade material at the deadline.
Straight fastball. Crappy off speed stuff, no out pitch. This is not the pitcher who had early hype in the minors. He just stinks now with far less in his arsenal than he did when he was a cant miss prospect.
I agree and that I would feel is not just his fault but the organizations inability to help players adjust
He's had 6 years since his MLB debut in 2007 to mature, develop more pitches (including the referenced 'out-pitch'), and it simply did not happen. Hughes represents failure on all levels - Hughes, the Yankee development system, pitching coaches, management, etc. Back in 2007 - it's hard to believe that BA prospect rankings had Hughes-4, Kershaw-5, Joba-6. Well, at least one of those guys panned out - sadly it wasn't either Yankee.
It will be interesting that no matter where they land after their Yankees days are over that if Joba and Hughes turn it around, then it should result of in a complete overhaul of the player development side of the Yankees. Again, not that we need more evidence to suggest that happen.
