Just a few weeks ago, I was watching a story, on ESPN, about Charlie Weiss letting a dying boy call the first offensive play of the game for the Fighting Irish. Even though the boy died the day before the game, Weiss honored his wish for the Irish to "pass to the right." Not a big deal? Tell that to Mike Martz! The head coach for the Rams can't even call a play anymore. Don't believe me? CLICK HERE! I never thought I would find myself defending Mike Martz because I think he's one of the biggest idiots in the NFL. (I believe I once read that Martz asked ownership to write a letter to the players telling them to respect him. Geez.) However, I find it disgusting that the Rams front office is using Martz's illness to force him out. If Martz hasn't been getting the job done, then fire him like a man. The INDISPUTABLE Truth is that Jay Zygmunt, the president of football operations, has no testicular fortitude.

The INDISPUTABLE Truth is that Jay Zygmunt, the president of football operations, has no testicular fortitude.</div> Ya that Zygmunt character does seem like an ass but "no testicular fortitude" is absolutely hilarious. That Charlie Weis story was unbelieveable because even though they started backed up in their endzone he ran the pass play and it worked!! I'm so glad he is doing well and turning around a storied program like ND. As for the Rams orginization..they are just a mess and should take any help they can get from Martz. He is and Idiot but when it comes to the offensive side of the ball he has always produced..he should be allowed to suggest things to the coaching staff.
That is terrible, they man is ill. They dont have to give any comment on the situation. Just wish him the best and whatever he wishes, do it. It isn;t that big of a deal. Terrible, for a coach that got them to the superbowl twice
If that is the underlying intention, then that is a poor way to handle things. However, either he is the coach or he isn't. Calling in plays from your couch should not be allowed (I've never called, but I've tried yelling them all the way to Texas Stadium before). That is condescending to both the offensive coordinator and the interim head coach. Martz probably just has good intentions, but he is not there running the show that day, they are. Its no difference than Jerry Jones coming down to tell Parcells what play to call. Its not his place. I wouldn't be surprised if the OC asked Zyggy to step in and take care of it. By the article, it doesn't sound like it was just a one-time thing. Martz just needs to relax and get better. Easier said that done, I am sure.
Since Martz has been out, the Rams have realized they can actually RUN the ball! Good news for Steven Jackson owners everywhere...
I guess this article hit home with me. I remember seeing my late step-father's job put in the want-ads the day he went into the hospital for surgery. He had been the shipping clerk for this department store for 12+ years. (This was back in the late 80s.) The guy who owned the store had treated us well, but his son had taken over and he's a lousy human being. Anyway, I read that this Jay Zygmunt guy had not been around too much until Martz got sick and now it looks like the hand writing is on the wall. I'm not saying that the Rams should let Martz call the ballgames from his couch, but would it hurt to listen to him for a few minutes? I'm sure Martz is frustrated by being forced to stay home, so how about treating him with a little understanding and dignity. Is it too much to ask the Rams' front office to treat their coach like a human being? I think I would have taken his phone call or the message from the courier at the door, even if I didn't pay it any attention. Then, the next day, I would have taken Martz out to lunch and told him how much the Rams' love and appreciate him, but he really needs to trust his staff and let them do their jobs and concentrate on getting better. However, this Zygmunt guy sounds like he has been waiting for a chance to get rid of Martz. I would be surprised to ever see Mike Martz coaching the Rams again, so can you blame him for sending in plays or doing anything he can to stay involved? He probably feels his job slipping away. To be reasonable even if Martz were healthy and coaching it was likely that he would of been fired at seasons end unless they had a division title. That according to Chris Mortenson. Granted you feel sorry for him and some even think he deserves a freebe. I'll ask this. Does Jim Haslett deserve a freebe because of the Saints problems? Right now most say No. I do agree that it's horrible that they aren't giving him any say in the team though. It's tough to see a former Super Bowl coach go out of the team he brought there like this but it's the NFL and owners and GM's just aren't patient.

Please go back and re-read my previous posts. I said, in my first post, "if Martz isn't getting the job done, then fire him like a man." I just think it's deplorable the Rams' front office can't step up and make they're intentions known. It's also deplorable to kick a man while he's down.

Some people think they derserve a shot next year with their health and of course the Katrina problems.
