The new inductees to the R&R hall of fame were announced, nice to see that Chicago FINALLY made it. (don't know what the hell took so long) but every year there seems to be that one group where you ask....WTF? & this years winner for that is N.W.A. The really foul mouthed rap group that gave us such great hits like "Fuck the police" There's also a group called Cheap trick who in there almost 40 years only had 3 top 10 singles, no top 40 hits in the last 25 years & only had one album crack the top 10. Last years head scratcher was Lou Reed who NEVER had a top ten hit & only had one song ever crack the top 20 (walk on the wild side). For your surprised viewing here are a few VERY well known & successful artists who are NOT in the R&R HOF........... Paul Anka Neil Sedaka Journey Carly Simon Carol King Robert Palmer Cher Bread Three dog night Leslie Gore Jay & the Americans Grand funk railroad Steppinwolf Duprees Skyliners Turtles Kool & the gang Foreigner Carpenters Bobby Vinton Just to name a few.
Does Carly Simon count? I mean besides the iconic "You're So Vain", did she have other significant hits? Like baseball...HoF moments don't make it a HoF career. I suppose it would help to know those inducted and why to better understand the list of uninducted.
^^^ Tom are you serious on Carly Simon? 29 nominations winning 7 of them including 3 Grammy's & 1972 Best new artist 1979 Best album 1989 Academy award for best original song (Working girl) ALSO.......... 7 top 20 albums 5 top 10 singles As far as other major hits...... You're so Vain #1 Nobody does it better #2 Mockingbird W/James Taylor #5 You belong to me #6 That's the way I've always heard it should be #10 Jesse #11 Anticipation #13
Okay...how much of that is from a handful of hits? Are there less accomplished artists in the RnR HoF? Need some perspective as opposed to a resume. I mean does everyone with a #1 song make it in?
Of course not but I would think one would at least need to have multiple top 20 or top 10 hits over a long career with at least a few awards. I mean hell even if some of her nominations were for different catagories that's still a pretty impressive resume. As far as less accomplished artists in the R&R HOF I'm sure there are many. Hell I mentioned one in Lou Reed.
...Tote, Carly Simon's "Another Passenger" album is a GREAT album, front to back...do yourself a favor and buy it. ...just a sample; ...and Rick, I was pretty she had already been inducted, so I checked...Carol King was inducted into the RRHOF in 1990.
Not according to this Ron...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Rock_and_Roll_Hall_of_Fame_inductees
...not sure what the deal is...but she was in fact inducted in 1990. ...look under "G". https://rockhall.com/inductees/byyear/1990/ https://rockhall.com/inductees/alphabetical/G/
I also wondered how Carole got left out; and thought I recalled Her's and Goffin going in as a duo. Carole was impressive latter on by herself, doing a potpourri repertoire, of great tunes, .... I understand why half of these musicians haven't made it or ever will. I mean what genre do you put Bread into..? I know, Bubble Gum Pop, so the RRHOF has to build a new wing. Could be the same for 3 Dog doo doo. I heard plenty of their music on the radio, in the days, but easily, quickly got burnt out for good. Kim collects frogs (figurines of all sorts) in her Garden, one Frog has a motion sensor, and sings "Jeremiah was a bullfrog", .... I almost tossed it. Besides if Bread, or other bubble gum pop artists are going into a new wing, then what does one do about The Monkees...? A short 3 years or so, in which they outsold either combo of: Elvis and the Beatles, or The Beatles, and the Rolling Stones, in those 2 yrs or so, which is staggering, as both Brittish Mega Groups, put out some memorable incredible music, in comparison to the bubble gum artists, ie, The Partridge Family next...? Or would it be Shirley and Her Son David, nah to never be. Bubble Gum was the Disco of the 60s, for the same generation, except me....! I believed more in a Disco Apocolypse, & don't begrude any Mirrorball dancing king. But late 60s-early 70s music buried bubble gum for awhile, while Woodstock had its day. NTM-Woodstock II, down by 59..... Then what does the RR-HOF do for Cher, put a Wax Figure of Her, in several catagories, Pop, 60s Hits w/Sonny too, shouldn't The Smothers Brothers be equal, or more so distinguished, only vs the others shows. But Cher made it bigger on Her own, and also became the Gay Man's Drag Queen #1 Idolized look alike, or- Cher was played in more Gay Bars for Men, who think they're women, not that I'd know, but so I've heard.......One for Bazooka, the other for Disco and Disco Flaming Figs, but then she was one helluva Actress IMO, also. The Vegas Queen of Showgirls, would require a new Wing also, for others, who often retire in Infamy by playing Vegas, for a year solid, or a lifetime.....Vegas needs its own Wing, so Cher's in half a dozen HOF Wings. or- The Stone's Altamont, with The Flying Burrito Bros. Opened the day long to midnight show. Gram Parsons at his finest, as was Chris Hillman ex Byrd, or Bernie Leadon, latter one of the original Eagles. Sneaky Pete Kleinlow, one of the most sought after Pedal Steel players of his time. He is best known as a member of the band the Flying Burrito Brothers and as a Session Musician for such artists as Joan Baez, Jackson Browne, The Byrds, Joe Cocker, Rita Coolige, The Eagles, The Everly Brothers, George Harrison, The Steve Miller Band, Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones, Ringo Starr, Stevie Wonder, Spencer Davis, Linda Ronstadt, and many others. Anka, Sedaka, I don't understand, both were legends, as were: Steppenwolf, who did NOT have their LP's in the 60s...? I saw and wrote a local paper Concert Review of John Kay, and his new band, right after Steppenwolf split up, one reason they're not in the HOF, not enough time together. Tho' a spoke's group of their groovy Easy Rider times, at times Steppenwolf's music played as a National Anthem to an entire Generation of , of, of....? Hippies, Bikers, Freedom Cries, what a strange era to be a part of, be it establishment, education, or being drafted....love to see these all get in. Kool and the Gang, strictly Disco all the way, send 'em to Motown for their own inductions, wrong city, not Rock n Roll, ...... The Carpenter's touched everyone's heart at one time or another, with a ton of great ballads. I think Bulomic, Anorexic conditions, are still taboo, perhaps even for the RR-HOF, but were they Rock n Roll, I don't classify 'em as such. Or a few others noted as well. Grand Funk, who didn't listen to them...? but HOF worthy, I question as much. I loved Robert Palmer long before anyone knew who he was, playing the Roxy, on Sunset blvd, a great 500 capacity night club, where I saw Ry Cooder on back to back nights, in 77 and 79, yet Ry is not listed as one of the Memorable Musicians on the Roxy's HOF list of shows, what a shame, even Ronnie Wood, Linda Ronstadt, were in the audience, once a John Lennon - Harry Nielsen hangout.... IMO, no one else goes in before someone acknowledges Ry Cooder's 50+ years of accomplishments. He's played with every great on the Planet. The Rolling Stones wanted Ry before they settled with Mick Taylor after Brian's death. Ry was a regular sessions player for the Stones- "Sticky Fingers" and "Let It Bleed" LP's, and taught Richards began at 17 with The Magic Band of Captain Beefheart, went on to play with Taj Mahal, in a band b/t the 2. Ry is noteworthy on a couple of Little Feat's first LP. He was called upon as a kid to come play with a musician who's in town for a show or 2 or 3, and need someone to play with, since Ry could play anything, yet is unique unto himself. Ry is most often credited as teaching Keith Richards open tuning on the guitar and thus inspiring him to write a bunch of classics we all know and love. Ry has won more than his share of awards, you can see on Wiki-. Another Iconic Epic Legend, who remains an obscure Musicians Musician. As for Journey and Foreigner, the Turtles and a couple of others, their bodies of work, seem short in comparison to others.... damned, this wore me out.......~Fini~
Rick, You launched the number one gripe I have. For years I left messages on Utube about how BOGUS that organization IS. There is no credit to their induction methods, judges and category...........How can rap be in the Rock n Roll H of F? I have NO respect for that slop. I wish we could start are own accreditted organization. Here are my bands/artists. Paul Revere and the Raiders, Deep Purple, LOS LOBOS, LITTLE FEAT, SPIRIT, THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, William Clarke ( Great harp player), Tommy Castro (Great blues guitarist) , Snooky Prior (Great harp player), Mister Mister, The Fixx, Jo Jo Gunn, Humble Pie, JJ Jackson, HUEY LEWIS and THE NEWS, Ry Cooder, Bobby Keys (sax player for the Stones) Paul Franklin (Steel guitarist extradinaire-Dire Straits), Dire Straits, Til Tuesday, JJ Cale, SHADOWFAX (the first new age band with multiplee cultural effects, Afro Celts (great band with celtic, arab and african influences)-(After all RnR came from African influence and the New Orleans area. Vince Gill and more forgotten real rock and roll, blues and upscale country musicians. Rap should have their own palace. Rap is not music. It is tribal poetry. THE ROCK HALL IS BOGUS
++Matts Once again YOU KNOW!!!!!!!!!! I agree with all you say. Steppenwolf, Grand Funk . OH NO I would induct TOWER OF POWER forgot........because they are the best most tight varied and live act EVER That band: they are the legends in the role of back up horns for so many groups such as Little Feat and Huey Lewis & the News. Of course Rocco and Garibaldi was the best rythym section of all time. In my past I was a DJ and station music director for my college radio station.
...the fact that "bands" like ABBA and the Beastie Boys are enshrined while others who are more deserving, are left out, speaks volumes.
Hell I'm also surprised that many great single artists are not in like...................... Frank Sinatra Dean Martin Andy Williams Perry Como Sammy Davis Jerry Vale Tony Bennett Now before anyone says, "That's not rock & roll" Well neither is rap & besides, Bobby Darin is in & he was the same type of singer as the ones I just mentioned.
Bobby Darrin was great with Pop Standards but Splish, Splash, Queen of the Hop, Plain Jane, and Dream Lover were examples of his Rock Contributions and the time period when he hit with those tunes was a factor. In 1957 and 1958 all the big boys like Holly, Domino, Cochran, Berry, Jerry Lee and the others were going full tilt boogie so the man had some pretty stiff competition. Overall though I never cared for the R&R HOF picks, or "Grammy" winners I made my own choices. I
Michael I agree, when you see several of the artists already in there & the MANY that have been overlooked the R&R HOF is not anything one can take very seriously.
