FORD MUSTANG 1964: The converible was the one everyone wanted, though the notchback and fastback models had an appeal of their own.

The Ford Mustang is about to become the newest member of an exclusive club - cars in continuous production for 50 years.

It will join vehicles such as Porsche's 911, the Chevrolet Corvette, the Mini and the VW Beetle.

In its first 49 years of production, the Mustang has gained a worldwide base of avid fans, including more than 5 million on Facebook, the most of any vehicle nameplate.

Mustang's combination of style, performance and affordability established an entirely new class of sporty car, and it has led the segment since.

Of the more than 9.2 million Mustangs produced and sold since the car's debut on April 17, 1964, most have originated close to Ford's home base in Dearborn, Michigan.

From the racetrack to the silver screen, from airwaves to toy boxes, Mustang has become an enduring part of pop culture.
