for 2010-11, Camby & Miller's combined salary was 18,380,060, meaning that alone, they could bring back as much as 23,075,075 in salary (using the 125% + 100K rule). If Matthews' 5,765,000 were factored in, they could bring back 29,031,325.

So if you were the GM and wanted to make a big splash, what kind of giant packages (no homo) might you try to get back in trade for these assets, based on the assumption that the other team wants to dump salary?

Some options that have been mentioned in other threads:
    • Bargnani/Calderon ($19M) for Camby/Miller
    • Smith/Johnson ($29M) for Camby/Miller/Matthews
    • Brand/Williams ($21.4M) for Camby/Miller
    • Brand/Iguodala ($29.2M) for Camby/Miller/Matthews/Johnson
    • Ellis/Biedrins ($20.5M) for Camby/Miller/Batum
    • Parker/Jefferson ($21.9M) for Camby/Miller/Batum

Comment on these or toss out others.

Strictly based on a salary dump from the other team.....Trade Machine seems to be down, but

Durant, Westbrook, Perkins, Collison for Miller, Camby, Matthews

As long as we aren't taking player value into account, this is what needs to be done. Get it done Larrychadpaulnatebertsteve

Sorry, I was presuming reasonableness as a prerequisite. Nobody believes that OKC is trying to dump salary.

Well then, would you mind adding Michael Jordan a la "Space Jam" to the deal? I believe it would make it better.

I'm gonna go with the trade with Atlanta except we add Batum (as suggested by MM). I just decided to make another adjustment; I will add Hinrich in from their side. Atlanta saves a ton of money, gets younger over the long run with Batum and Mathews and is still OK over the short run with Camby taking Josh Smith place and Miller taking Hinrich's place.

Portland also gets younger but now has two guys in their prime; Johnson provides the shooting they desperately need and Smith should be healthier and more energetic than the aging Camby. Hinrich will give better defense and shoot the three better than Miller, also younger.

To tell the truth, I am really liking this trade and I think it's feasible. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=3ostzbg

I like it so much that I will throw in our draft pick.

Of course, Atlanta could just not exercise Miller's contract and use our draft pick for another PG or ask for Mills or Johnson from us. Or they could exercise it for a year (it's not that much) while they developed the PG or draft pick from us.

Problem with this is that Hinrich is an additional $9M in salary, bringing our total incoming for this deal to over $38M. We would have to send out over $30M in salary to match that, and absent including Roy, LA, or Crash, that's not happening.

Well, I just tried it on espn tradechecker (per my link above); maybe it's not working properly? Can anyone try it on Realgm because that's not working for me, everytime I want Atlanta, it gives me Cleveland!

Well that sucks! I got really excited when I saw that ESPN "this trade works". At least I didn't follow through with my plan to email to Chad Buchanan.
OK, what if we modify: Camby, Miller, Batum and our draft pick for Josh Smith and Hinrich? Is it still a blockbuster trade? (except that leaves out Atlanta's greatest incentive, getting rid of Johnson's contract!)

What about us just not getting Hinrich?

Camby Miller Matthews Batum for Smith and Johnson. Atlanta gets massive salary relief and two young talents in Matthews and Batum. Portland gets the two best players in the deal.

ESPN trade machine is down right now. It doesn't have any salaries input into the system, so you could literally trade an entire team for one guy and it would say "accepted".

Yeh, I like that too. It's just that we wouldn't have a PG. If we got agreement from them that they would release Miller, how long would we have to wait to sign him? Would he be willing to do that?

And I think this deal would be more palatable for Atlanta, they probably prefer Hinrich over Miller and since they keep him they don't even need to think about exercising Miller's contract.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Much as I like all four players Portland sends out, I'd love to do this deal. Johnson, Wallace, Smith and Aldridge is a pretty nice core, even if Oden can't return. If he can, it means one of them is quite tradeable.

The main problem would be a complete lack of a starting-level point guard. Hopefully they'd be able to address that with an MLE signing, trade or draft pick.

Why do you feel they prefer Hinrich over Miller? He's a much, much worse player, even accounting for his better defense. Just from an age perspective?

I never considered him much worse; just looking at statistics he doesn't seem that off. Anyway, maybe Miller would be a better fit for Atlanta and Hinrich (3 pt shooting) for Portland. I did come up with a trade, if we wait till after July 1 Hinrich salary actually comes down and makes it possible to get Johnson, Smith and Hinrich in exchange for Camby, Miller, Mathews, Batum, Rudy and Babbit and the Bayless trade exception (if it would still be in effect). Might have to be two trades since don't they have to wait a year to trade Hinrich unless it just involves him? (Now this one I might email to Buchanan!)

Also just thought of a new blockbuster while reading Bill Simmons draft preview, who said Golden State's new owner needed to get rid of David Lee's massive contract.

We give Camby and Miller for Lee and Monta Ellis. I think we gotta give Batum on this too even though we are taking on that massive contract. Then we draft a PG and/or try to get Miller back after 30 days (is it 60 days now?)

Well, looking at PER (which I like as a "simple advanced stat" since it adjusts for pace and the effect of free throws/three-pointers on scoring efficiency, etc), Miller has been a little below All-Star caliber whereas Hinrich has been low to mid-level reserve. So I'd say that's a pretty large difference.

In any case, Hinrich probably would be a better "fit" even if a significant talent downgrade for a Blazers team that added Johnson and Smith, since some perimeter shooting would be quite necessary and Hinrich's defense would be welcome. Plus, since Miller would have to be part of the deal regardless, the Blazers do need a point guard. I really like your deal, of Camby/Miller/Matthews/Batum/Rudy/Babbit for Smith/Johnson/Hinrich. It would save them a ton of money and give them a couple of good young players (Batum, Matthews) if they want to reconfigure their team. But a trade with so many moving parts is extremely rare. I'd be thrilled if it happened, though.
