In an attempt to pump a little more life into this forum, lets put ourselves in the seat of the Magic general manager for a second. If you were the GM this offseason, what would you have done different as opposed to what Otis Smith has been doing? Who would you have selected in the 2006 NBA Draft? 1st Round: 2nd Round: What trades would you make? Who would you sign off of Free Agency? What would be the final depth chart be by the season opener? C- PF- SF- SG- PG- 6th Man-
i like all the moves hes made soo far...to add on to anything i would try to deal deiner for a draft pick because we all know he wont play unless big injuries come about..
The only thing I'd do differently is draft Ronnie Brewer, even though it doesn't fill a need, but I'd draft him for the sake of having one of my favourite rookies on the team. That and Ryan Hollins with the second rounder. I'd also like to see Garrity moved; if the Magic can add Dooling into the mix and acquire a young talent I'm all up for it.
1st round: Ronnie Brewer and he would be starting at SG, but other than that I don't see any problems with what we have done.

The Magic's first rd slection made no sense to me. Reddick was an amazing college player, but in the pros?? I can't see it, especially if he's a skinny wimp like his college days! The guy better be packin' on the muscle this off season. Maybe he'll be the next Fred Hoilberg. Who knows!
The Magic selected him so we can help Dwight Howard produce. If Dwight gets doubled, he can kick it out to Redick for the jumper. That's all I can think of. I really wanted to get Carney but it's cool that we selected Redick. James Augustine was pretty good in college and he could be a good backup PF. Pat Garrity isn't athletic as he was in college. He can't play defense so the Magic don't give him much minutes.

Redick isn't as unathletic as most people assume, he's just undersized with mediocre leaping skills, but his quickness and speed isn't THAT bad. Garrity on the other hand simply can only shoot the ball, that's it. If he couldn't shoot, I wouldn't be suprised to see him finding another job elsewhere.

For some reason we think it's smart to give him 20 minutes and give him 1 shot. The reason why he didn't play as much last year as previous years was because he would hesitate every time he got it. If he comes out firing right away with no hesitation and he gets a good 5-7 shots in his 20 minutes, then it would be a productive 20 mins, regardless if he makes the shots or not. Him getting 1 shot in 20 minutes is not productive at all because he can't play defense and he can't rebound.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TheFreshPrince:</div><div class="quote_post">he isnt even undersized, wasnt he like 6'4 1/2" with out shoes?</div> Yeah he's 6'4 and a half on a good day, 6'4 normally. That is undersized when you aren't as athletic as other SG's. Don't forget he has to play guys like Kobe and Tmac who are way taller. I would say the avg size of the SG position is probably around 6'5-6'6.
Some SGs are even up to 6'7. But that's why the Magic signed Bogans so they have a defensive SG. Redick is brought in as a specialist in shooting the ball and creating more opportunities for teammates. Garrity is eating cap and has been injured recently. He doesn't have many opportunities to score because he doesn't take shots because like GatorsowntheNCAA said he hesitates. Redick is about 6'4 and is listed around 6'4, 6'5. Bogans is around 6'5 but is better defensively.
reddick can guard a guy 2 inches taller than him, that isnt a big differance. Plusd there are plenty of undersized guys in hte league for him to guard as well.

The undersized guards are extremely quick, which is why they made it into the NBA. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see JJ guarding any starter in the NBA effectively. They are either bigger and stronger or quicker or both. When he's in the Magic are best off going to zone.
