Re: Im coaching my first team this summer!!!!! This is the email sent to me:Tony,You indicated you were also interested in playing ball this summer. You will need to fill out a registration form, which you can pick up at the CAPPA office. Are you still interested in coaching a team? If so, I will assign you to coach a Division I team. Please call or email me as soon as possible to confirm. As soon as I compile the team roster, I will forward a copy to you.Any tips?
Re: Im coaching my first team this summer!!!!! Run them like hell. jk.... umm how old they going to be??If they are young, like 7-10 or something, i'd just make sure to put players in spots that they can suceed without a ton of effort, and make sure they have fun. I wouldnt try any type of offense too hard and same thing on the defensive end as well.I'd have them practice a ton of layups and bank shots from the block. They wil be able to get tons of points off stuff like that. I've seen plenty of little kid games and they miss a ton of them. If they are older, i'd try and make sure players know thier role and try to make them buy into a team game. Thats how teams win. I'd go with a lot of pick and rolls or a flex offense for them. The flex offense is pretty easy to learn and run and a pick and roll game would be as well, but also effective. If i had small players, i'd install a zone defense as well as a man to man. With all kids, most times they arent going to be making a ton of outside shots, so make sure they protect the paint and own it. It also depends on personel. If you have a ton of fast kids, i'd try to speed the game up and have them press so they can get easy baskets, while if i had a very dominate post player and slower kids, i'd slow the game down to a stand still and grind it out. I'd have them practice a ton of layups in this as well. Also, teach them the right technque in blocking out. I'm sure there are other things, but those are just some things i thought off the top of my head. A ton of ppl at my school actaully thought i could of coached our team better than our head coach could have.
Re: Im coaching my first team this summer!!!!! Well that age is around Grade 5 to 7 right? They would be pretty young so you can teach them that much. I would go with the basics on defense. Teach them zone and man to man. On offense teach them simple plays like Pick and Roll, the Shuffle etc. Otherwise just let them have fun and play basketball and at a young age you have to give everyone close to equal minutes.
Re: Im coaching my first team this summer!!!!! Tell them to keep their arms up when defending. Kids that age get lazy on defense. Especially when they are defending the person with the ball
Re: Im coaching my first team this summer!!!!! Good luck. Make it fun for the kids but at the same time teach the game well.
Re: Im coaching my first team this summer!!!!! Teach them1) You need to work on the wide open shot, there is no excuse for missing a wide open shot.(2) Free Throws, it's a very importent aspect of the game.(3) Layups, left handed and right handed. (4) Keep your feet moving on offense, If you forget what to do, just keep moving, and set screens.(5) Contact, don't be afraid of it.(6) When the ball is on the floor do whatever you can to get that ball. Those are some things, you should work on with them..
Re: Im coaching my first team this summer!!!!! Throw the Triangle offense at em...I duno just a suggestion
