Okay so me and my girlfriend are going to new york together in december this year. we both are in art school at the moment and she leaves december 1 on a school thing where they visit alot of galleries and such. anyway im meeting her there maybe the 23rd of december and we will be staying for 3 to 4 weeks. i need suggestions on where to go, what to do and how to do it with limited money, basically i need the list of cheap stuff to do in NY. i also would like to see my first live NBA game and want to know how much tickets are at madison square garden. oh also if anyone here lives in new york and knows some good bars or things like that where you dont have to be 21 then please let me know, im looking for as much information as i can get. thanks in advance.

$1 hookers. Just don't do it while she's there.

Tickets to the Garden are high since the Knicks are so good. But you can buy cheap tickets and depending on how slick you are, make it further down to the more expensive seats. I sat front row instead of the nosebleed seats I was supposed to go to.

There are tons of museums out here. Since you're in art school you might enjoy the MoMA. The NBA Store is always fun. It brings back memories when I used to cut class to go there. Good high school times. You can always stroll through Central Park also. There are so many famous neighborhoods to visit too: Harlem, SoHo, The Village, to name a few.

Of course you have to visit 42nd street. It's a little pricey, but it's worth it. From movies to bars to restaurants to clubs to the $1 pizza, there's no place like it.

The possibilities are endless in New York. You shouldn't have a hard time finding something to do.

Where are you from? Usually those who aren't from big cities appreciate the grandeur of New York most.

Well I'm in NY almost every other day and I actually just got back home 10 minutes ago. Don't go to the Garden to watch a Knicks game, instead come across the water (5-15 minutes by bus, I'd say) to watch a Nets game, unless you want to spend more money for the MSG experience. You can get tickets as cheep as $10 (might have went up to $15) and sit anywhere on the 2nd tear because no one goes to the Nets games. Definitely check out Central Park, SoHo, The Village and 42nd street as Mr. J said.

in answer to MrJ's question, i am from melbourne australia so it will be a big change to be in new york at that time of the year. ive never seen snow before so that'll be fun. anyway going to the travel agent today after art history lecture (which, incidently is focused on the new york school, thats abstract expressionism for you not in the know, guys like jacksonvpollock) anyway, thats a great idea about seeing the nets instead, because i really dislike the knicks, no offense to knicks fans. Im also going tro be in LA for a few days, maybe a week, staying with my girlfriends relatives, so hopefully i can get to watch the lakers at staples, which has been a dream of mine for years and years. so I know about central park and 42nd street, is the nba store amongst alot of expensive stores, like designer stores? thats what i heard, so yeah i'll get myself a magic johnson jersey i think and also some shorts to go with them, always wanted an old school laker uniform. also is it really really cold? sorry to sound so ignorant but should i be packing thermals? oh and it will also be my nineteenth birthday whilst im in new york, january 1st! man this is so cool, got alot of money to save though, i have a job where im averaging about 200 a week, but i think i need a bit of a bit of a boost in cash, so ill sell some shit like my bass guitar, that'll go for 500 bucks, plus some percussion stuff for atleast 150. so i think ill get the money, we'll see.

the best thing to do in ny is to walk across the brooklyn bridge.

seriously, pick up a guidebook like the Rough Guide through amazon--it'll give you some ideas. If you can get your hands on the writer's guild handbook from the 1930s, it'll give you a lot of historical perspective. There's a lot of literature on the architecture of NY, especially from the era where they had an influx on immigrants at the beginning of the 20th century. Don't know if you're into that, but new york paved the way for housing and safety laws, and a lot of that architecture is still there. A tour of liberty island and ellis island is fun. If the weather is nice, you can't beat seeing NY on bicycle, but you obviously have to do it on saturday or sunday morning when there isn't as much traffic. New York's central park was a monumental undertaking which was carefully planned and was (I think) the largest public park at the time, and has been copied since. Lots of museums--but the architecture is where it is at.

Congrats man. I went to New York back when I was like 11 and it was kickass. Went to the top of the World Trade Centers 13 months before they got destroyed which is a little eerie. I think theres a picture of me and my sister at the top somewhere in my house. They have bomb ass sausages on the street and all kinds of crap to do there. Awesome pizza.

Reminds me of my dad's story of when he was a kid getting shitfaced drunk with his friends in New York then walking back to his house in NJ across the George Washington Bridge when it was closed due to snow.

Check out the MET. It's pretty bomb.

Then check out the Mets, they usually bomb.

    Then get bombed.

Be sure to listen to Beastie Boys, Biggie, Wu-Tang, Lost Boys or Nas the whole time you're there.

Get falafel at Mamoun's, a couple of blocks below Washington Square Park on Macdougal, if you're in the village. And yes on thermals if you'll be outside a lot and you're not used to the cold.
