While it's always easy to simply predict the teams that look best on paper will be the only ones who have a shot However, the author overlooked two very important factors - age and injuries, and a possible third - mid-season trades.

The Spurs were ancient last year and are even older this year. If Duncan goes down or is slowed by injuries like he was last season and the Spurs are out of it. Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess were nice picks, but both are well past their primes. They can help Duncan and Ginobili, but they can't replace them.

We saw what happpened to the Celtics last year when KG went down. The same thing could happen again this year. It could be KG, Pierce, Ray-Ray or Sheed Those guys are all 32 - 34 years old now. How much gas do they have left, and how healthy can they be when it counts come next May?

As LeBron goes, so goes Cleveland. Without LeBron, the Cavs would struggle to even make the play-offs. Even with him they have a lot of older players with past serious injury issues (Shaq, Z, etc.).

The Magic added Vince - no spring chicken. Dwight can carry them far, but he can't win it all by himself. Will Vince be healthy and productive when they need him most?

The defending champion Lakers look like the best bet on paper, but Kobe, Artest and Odom are all over 30 now, and Bynum and Pau already have injury issues before the season has even started.

Form the article, the author seems to imply that we should just skip the regular season and jump right to a 5-team play-off. They play the games for a reason. Before the 2004 season, the Pistons would not have been one of the top five teams expected to win the title. The Lakers, Kings, Spurs, Timberwolves and Pacers all looked better on paper than the Pistons before the season started. Trades and injuries changed the eventual outcome. Likewise for the 1995 Rockets who limped into the play-offs as the 6th seed in the West. You never know what's going to happen and that's why they play the games. Will one of the five teams he mentioned win the 2010 NBA title, probably. They are certainly the favorites, but it's not a given. The 1976-77 Portland Trailblazers certainly weren't on anybody's radar as a preseason favorite. They were the youngest team in the league and had never even made the play-offs and finished last in the Pacific Division the previous season. Yet, they made the play-offs and upset the Lakers and 76ers to win the NBA championship.

    Let the season begin!
