v.s. Indianapolis Colts v.s. New York GiantsSunday September 10, 2006 8:15p.m. ET
The NFL will kickoff the season?s first Sunday Night Game with Manning Bowl I. The match-up of Colts quarterback Payton Manning and his younger brother, Giants quarterback Eli Manning will mark the first time in NFL history that two brother?s have faced each other as opposing quarterback?s. Besides the match-up of the Manning brother, this game will showcase two teams who both have strong cases for why they should be considered Super Bowl XLI contenders. For the Colts they enter the game looking to build off a strong 2005 season in which they started off 13-0. Led by Manning, the Colts as usual can be expected to put a lot of points on the board. The deep receiving core of Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, and Brandon Stockley, and tight end Dallas Clark could pose a problem for the Giants secondary. The offensive line play will be key to the Colts success, they will need to keep sack artists Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora, and rookie Mathias Kiwanuka away from Manning. The Colts will also need to establish some type of running game in order to keep the Giants defense honest. Running back Dominic Rhodes will have some big shoes to fill following the free agent departure of Edgerine James to the Cardinals. If the Giants are allowed to loosen up and concentrate on their pass coverage, Manning could spend much of the day on his back. Defensively the Colts will need to find a way to contain or atleast slow down the running of Tiki Barber. They will also need to put pressure on Eli Manning, and try to force him to make some mistakes. For the Giants they also look to build off of last season. The 2005 playoff team added several key players in the off season. Outside linebacker LaVarr Arrington was the headline player, but they also bolstered the secondary by adding veteran cornerbck Sam Madison, and safety Will Demps. The new additions to the secondary will be tested early and often by the Colts. Their play along with cornerback Corey Webster and strong safety Gibril Wilson will be a major key for the Giants. Offensively, Eli Manning will need to keep his composure and make good decisions. He cannot afford to make early mistakes and allow the Colts to build an early lead. He wants no parts of a shoot-out with Peyton. Left tackle Luke Petitgout will need to keep Colts defensive end off of Manning and give him time to throw. Plaxico Burress could be a deciding factor in the Giants success. Burress and his 6?-5? frame will pose a match-up problem for cornerback Nick Harper, 5?10? and Jason David, 5? 8?. Another matchup to keep an eye on will be that of Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey, and Colts strong safety Bob Sanders. If Shockey, who is listed as probable with an ankle injury can catch some balls early, it will force Sanders to loosen up a bit and make him less of a factor in run support. If Tiki Barber is able to have success running the ball the Giants will be able to control the clock a bit, and keep the score down. OutLook: This game if nothing else should be a very entertaining game watch the Manning brother go head-to-head. Expect to see Archie at least 25 times during the broadcast. This game will probably be the most pressure Eli has ever faced in a football game. Playing against your big brother is even bigger than the playoffs. Peyton Manning?s experience and composure should be enough to get the Colts through this game. Keys to the Game: Colts:-Put pressure on Eli Manning, and force mistakes-Contain the running of Tiki Barber-Get ahead early and force the Giants to play catch up.Giants:-Keep Eli Manning composed-Run the Ball effectively-Contain the passing attack of the Colts Prediction: Colts 41 Giants 28Fantasy Outlook: Quarterbacks:Peyton Manning 26-38 330 yards 4 TD 1 Int.Eli Manning 22-35 280 yards 2 TD 2 Int.Runningbacks:Dominic Rhodes 15-55 1 TD (rushing); 3-20 0 TD (receiving)Tiki Barber 22-110 2 TD (rushing); 6-70 1 TD (receiving)Receivers:Marvin Harrison 6-90 2 TDReggie Wayne 8-115 1 TDBrandon Stokley 5-65 0 TDPlaxico Burress 4-75 1 TDAmani Toomer 6-80 0 TDTim Carter 2-15 0 TDTight Ends:Dallas Clark 4-50 1 TDJeremy Shockey 3-40 0 TDKickers:Adam Vinatieri 5 XP, 2 FGJay Feeley 4 XP, 0 FG
It was a great game to watch....both QB's looked great. More of a Shootout then anything else, but naturally not even Eli could beat Peyton Manning in a Shootout. But it was fun to watch.
To tell you the truth I thought it would be more of a gunout then it was but it was still a good game.

He got a few tough breaks from Feely missing an Early Field Goal that would have made the difference in between playing from behind and playing with the lead and the Make-Believe Carter Offensive Pass Interference on a 3rd down leaving him in 3rd and long. The only play I can really see you blameing Eli for was the Interception with 5 minutes left, which was right after the Complete BS Pass Interference call leaving Eli on 3rd and 11 forcing him to throw the ball and throw it deep. If he doesnt get a first down there the game is just about over so obviously he is going to try and make something happen there and worst case scenario was a long interception that is just about the same as a punt which is exactly what happened. I cant really fault Eli for trying to take the team on his back in that particular scenario as 95% of Quarterbacks in this league would have done the exact same thing. The Final Drive Eli never really had a chance to make plays because Shockey didnt run out of bounds which drained the clock, the Penalty on the Center for the 10 second run-off, and the Defense before that drive didnt get the stop at first not leaving him much time on the clock.

Just wondering, Would you rip a QB for throwing an Interception on an Hail Mary?

The Penalty put the Giants in the exact situation they did not want to be in, the one where they HAVE to throw the ball mid to deep. The Giants have to throw the ball at least 11 yards downfield, and the Colts are well aware of this so they are going to be sitting in a prevent defense going to completely knock out the mid-deep pass range. Game is basically on the line, because you have to know your Defense cannot stop Peyton Manning. What exactly would you call there genius? A Run likely isnt going to get you 11 yards.A Short Pass likely isnt going to get you 11 yards. They are defending against the mid-deep passes. The Giants Offensive Coordinator decided to take a shot there, because Worst Case Scenario on the deep pass is an Interception that accomplishes the same damn thing that a 5 yard pass and a Punt would have accomplished. Colts ball. Best Case Scenario though is the Giants get the TD because of it and go on to win the game. It's a play 95% of the teams in the NFL would do in that particular situation, but because Eli Manning did it you declare it a choke? Cmon man, cut the kid some slack.

Eli didn't make a bad pass, the defender just made a good play. Kinda like the Ed Reed INT. Simms didn't make a terrible pass but Clayton didn't go up for it so Reed just went up and snatched it.If he just made about 2-3 more passes to bring up his passing percentage and the Giants had a kicker not named Jay Feely (I can see it now... with the Giants 1st round pick in the NFL draft, the Giants select Kicker Mason Crosby, University of Colorado.), Giants would have easily won.
