Indians tee off on Saunders, bullpen

ANAHEIM -- Joe Saunders flirted with another early exit but double plays helped him eke out five innings Tuesday night in the Angels' 9-2 loss to the Indians at Angel Stadium.

Coming off a start against Detroit in which he got knocked out in the third inning and allowed five runs, Saunders kept it close this time: He held the Indians to three runs on nine hits and three walks, mostly thanks to inning-ending double plays his defense turned in three consecutive frames. But he needed 104 pitches to get through his five innings, and his record fell to 1-4.

Reliever Matt Palmer let the game slip away in his third inning of work, allowing five runs, four of them in the top of the eighth inning.

Indians starting pitcher Mitch Talbot was strong from the start, retiring the first eight Angels batters, then escaping a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning. Talbot, who entered the game without allowing a run in his previous 13 innings, allowed one run in the third inning and exited after 6 1/3 innings.

Saunders first got into trouble in the second inning, when the Indians loaded the bases with one out. A comebacker ended the inning with a 1-2-3 double play. Saunders got another double play to end the third inning, but the Indians went ahead 2-0 on four hits before it: one on a Shin-Soo Choo single, the other on an Austin Kearns double. Kearns finished 3-for-6 with 5 RBIs.

A Bobby Abreu single in the bottom of the inning cut the Indians lead to 2-1. Brandon Wood, coming off a 3-for-4 performance, was again 3-for-4, including a homer in the ninth.

The Indians' Grady Sizemore hit into a line-drive double play at second base to end the fourth inning and keep the Angels' deficit to one.

Kearns' solo homer in the fifth inning off Saunders extended the lead to 3-1 and Choo's single in the sixth inning off Palmer extended the lead to 4-1. Kearns added a bases-clearing double in the eighth.

Saunders has looked like absolute horse shit this year. Honestly, shut him down for a start or two. He needs to clear his mind.

Brandon Wood also had another great game, going 3-4 with a HR and 2 singles. Hopefully he is finding his groove @ the plate.
