Interesting article from Sweeny Murti... If it were up to me, I don't give Cano anything more than 6 years... and I am hesitant to see him get more than $25M/year... I don't see him signing at that price... Jeter would be nice if he'd decline and sign the 1 year $7M offer that Sweeny suggested. Otherwise, keep him. I wouldn't even offer Granderson the qualifying option. Hughes and Chamberlin have to go. I'd bring Kuroda back if we could, but sounds like he wants to go to Japan... Adios to Youkilis and Hafner... I'd rather see Kendry Morales brought in rather than resigning Overbay... Let Reynolds go, keep Ryan, and let Logan go... And it doesn't even talk about catcher, which is definitely a need... http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/10/14/sweeny-breaking-down-yankees-long-list-of-free-agents/
I agree with everything you said. And may I add that I'd also make a pitch to bring Chavez back to New York as a bench player & would also make a pitch to Stephen Drew but only if A-Rod is out for the year & if he'd be willing to move over to 3rd for one season before taking over for Jeter in 2015.
I would take Drew in a heartbeat. Also hope they get McCann but I would go after Salty for catcher if McCann does not work out.
Salty would probably cost less but you really couldn't go wrong with either. Personally, I'd prefer McCann.
McCann is my first choice and Salty is #2. At this point I am better behind the plate for the Yankees than Stewart is. If the Yankees bring him back I may have a coronary.
You would let Granderson walk without getting the draft pick? that's not too bright, they most certainly will make the qualifying offer, at the least, and may even look to keep him, because he may prove to be a good deal, guys like Choo are going to ask a fortune and how many of those big contracts can they carry? They may go after a catcher, but McCann is a long shot IMO, he's going to get a long deal somewhere and I doubt NY is going to invest that much in the one position they have going for them in the farm, and Romine is improving. I think NY is going to make one thing their priority this off season- pitching, pitching and more pitching, it's the only reason they missed the playoffs this year and unless they fix it now they will not hang with the better teams in baseball, so why bother with the offense? can't do it all, they have too much payroll already.
My sentiments exactly. I mean when Rusty posts anything you just have to assume at this point that he's just joking. I mean seriously, anyone who says that pitching is the ONLY reason we lost this year has to be kidding. And guys like Choo will be looking for a fortune? Like Granderson will be such a bargain. One thing I'll say for Rusty, you can always get a good laugh from his posts. So he can't be all bad.
I think the Mets alone will push the price of Choo up, but he's terrible against lefties, so maybe it's for the best to lay off him. And yes, if NY just pitched better when they finally started hitting this past year, they would have made it IMO, CC and Kuroda pitching well could have been the difference.
Yeah Rusty, I'm sure having no bench, no 3rd baseman, shortstop, catcher, & several other poor performing position players had NOTHING to do with it. It was ALL on the pitching. Keep us laughing kid.
..."when they finally started hitting"?...uhhh, they batted .242 for the season....243 in the first 1/2 ...242 in the second 1/2...and .222 in September. ...They also slugged .376 which was 1 point higher than Houston for last place. ...They also scored 203 runs less than Boston but the Yanx' pitching staff only allowed 15 runs more than Boston did. ...but yeah, pitching was clearly the Yanx main problem in 2013.
I understand what you guys are saying, but they were in it after August, they were doing well with the bats, and if NY pitching could have got out a single Boston batter in September they may be in the mix. The Yankees have a ton of work to do, but I hope the focus is on pitching, a dominant starter should be the priority.
...and again, no, they weren't. April .261 .330 .432 .763 May .233 .286 .376 .662 June .223 .290 .330 .620 July .248 .309 .334 .644 August .267 .337 .417 .755 September .222 .288 .361 .649 Pre All-Star .243 .307 .376 .684 Post All-Star .242 .307 .375 .682
A true #1 would certainly help but How will they get a dominant starter when there are none in free agency and the farm has very little they can piece together to make an impact trade? I supposed they can sign that guy from Japan and hope he is more darvish and less diceK. But we all know that's far from a sure thing.
Time for the brass to get wired, get the right folks hired, the wrong folks fired. Many holes to fill but Girardi resigned was a damn good start. Next logical move would be to get Cano done at hopefully 5 and 100 mil plus. As the old song goes "it's gonna take some time this time" but at least they are trying to right the ship.
You don't see an improvement there in August? and did you watch the games? guess not... they were a much better hitting team, until Boston ended them, and the bats were battling in that series, but the pitching failed.
...uhhh, you said "I understand what you guys are saying, but they were in it after August"...which would imply September, right? ...and Boston "ended them" in September, not August. ...do you ever think before you type?...ever?
I would absolutely let Granderson go without the draft pick opportunity for 2 reasons... 1, what if he takes it and we are stuck with another mostly useless OF... that would be Soriano, Ichiro, Wells, and Granderson... I'd only want Soriano of that list playing with any regularity... expect Gardner to resign too... and 2, what are the Yankees actually going to accomplish with said pick? more disappointment me thinks... Regarding catcher, I definitely go after McCann, but as others have suggested, Salty too... Strange idea here, but maybe even go after both at the same time and first one to sign gets the deal. I definitely agree that they are going to go hard after pitching
