"For a game that started out with bright sunshine and warm temperatures, Josh McDaniels wore long white sleeves. The Broncos' coach needed a place to stuff away all his tricks.

With his team outmanned because of injuries, McDaniels tried beating the New York Jets by beguiling them. He showed off the no-huddle offense. He used an onside kick. He switched from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3. There was —ta-da! — Tim Tebow.

What McDaniels didn't have up his sleeve was how to overcome an official with a yellow hankie in his pocket.

A fourth-down Hail Mary pass by Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez with 1:26 remaining became a prayer answered when pass interference was called on Broncos safety Renaldo Hill.

The penalty set up an easy touchdown and keyed the Jets' 24-20 victory on another unseasonably warm fall afternoon at Invesco Field at Mile High against a Broncos team that pulled out all the stops in hopes of making their self-proclaimed "Orange Sunday" a memorable experience.

"We saw them change up pretty much everything they (normally) do," Sanchez said. "We prepared for one thing, and they would do something totally different. They had nothing to lose. They figured, 'Five starters are out, let's do whatever we can to try to win.' "

It was fitting, perhaps, that a wildly entertaining, mistake-filled game was decided on a penalty.

The pass-interference call was disputed, but aren't they all? It was indisputably the difference in the outcome. The Broncos were leading 20-17, and the Jets were facing fourth-and-6 at the Broncos' 48.

With those in the orange-clad sellout crowd exhorted to wave their freebie orange towels by none other than Brian Dawkins, the Broncos' Pro Bowl safety who was forced to wave and jump and cheerlead from the sideline because of a knee injury, Sanchez stayed calm amid the chaos."
