Pretty much this. Sounds like the ex player was expecting fans to cheer and never do anything else. When your at a game against a good opponent and its close you and everyone else goes through a rollercoaster of emotions on each and every play. Add alcohol to the mix and you get drunken yelling based on the persons emotion at that given time. Anyone could have told this guy to expect a little bit of what he experienced.
