I don't think he could pass a physical. In this economic climate, do you trade for a guy who's injured.

Right now, I'm going with No, and that's one of the reasons we're having trouble with trades. Of course, he may be better by July 15th, but I don't think so.

I don't think "that's one of the reasons we're having trouble making trades." What trade is out there right now that is doable? I think most of us expect some movement on draft day, when the Blazers have the most leverage.

As far as Webster, I highly doubt the Blazers have any misconceptions about Martell's value as an asset. He didn't play at all last year, so his value is low. If he's going to be dealt, he will be a small part of a bigger deal, not the main piece. KP is not that stupid to allow Martell's low stock price deter his ability to make deals.

Not to mention I think the organization is pretty high on Martell, and if anything they'd more than likely look to deal guys like Outaw, Sergio, Blake, etc.

he is not chronically injured, he had a stress fracture on his foot...then went back too soon, so he reinjured it. its not a lingering injury as far as I know, once its fully healed, its healed.

In terms of timing, it doesn't seem to make much sense to trade Martell. His stock is down (so we wouldn't get much in return) and he's relatively inexpensive (no harm to keeping him on the squad).

On the other hand, if he comes back healthy he has a ton of upside -- that sweet outside shot could be huge next year. This time next year, he could have a lot more value for us either as a player or as tradebait in a sign & trade. If not, I strongly doubt we miss out on getting a decent player in return this summer anyway.

Between the two options, I said there is interest. I think it's very unlikely that his career might be over, and I find it very unlikely that teams would be totally uninterested in him.

Do I think teams put a lot of value on him at present? No. But I still think the first option is closer to reality.

yeah.. I'm a little confused to why people are talking like it will never heal.. granted I'm no doctor, maybe it has trouble healing I just dont know that.

yeah, not the greatest wording on the poll options.

It's extremely unlikely that a broken bone turns out to be career ending... how many young players have had their careers ended by a broken bone? He was a pretty mediocre wing when he was healthy, so I doubt he had that much trade value to lose. On the plus side he's a young vet who seems to have some upside and he's got a reasonable contract. I could see him included in a larger deal as filler.

Webster has zero value as a player until he can prove he's ready to contribute. Maybe you could trade him to a team looking to dump an awful contract in return.

You would be lucky to get Chris Duhon for him.

I see Martell's value at the lowest of his career at the moment. He won't get moved.

What leverage will they have on draft day they don't have right now? It sure seems to me as deals go down Portland's position gets weaker, not stronger.

Honestly, this isn't antagonistic. I really want someone to post something that gives me some hope. Right now I see a GM who wants to move up in the draft to grab a potential backup and not much else.

Oh yeah, and Martell is currently worthless on the trade market.

If you haven't figured out something is wrong when a stress fracture typically only needs about 2 to 4 weeks to heal, then I don't know what to say. I did some reading on them a while back, and one of the ways you can get a stress fracture is if the muscle tissue breaks down and lets the shock of something like say, landing from a dunk, travel straight into the bone. The bone might heal, but if the muscle tissue doesn't, it won't do any good.

All I can say is that for some reason on the NBA draft preview, for some reason the NBA director of scouting, Ryan Blake, for some reason when choosing who the Blazers would choose to draft, mentioned Martells injury and that being a reason for them to draft another small forward. Why would he mention that if he did not know something that we do not?

Yeah Martell would be difficult to trade right now. Too many unknowns.

But he's a tough, dedicated guy who's always been a hard worker and has had excellent conditioning. IIRC, he's finished 1st by a mile in Nate's infamous conditioning test over the last two years (maybe more). I'd be surprised if he didn't make a full recovery and ultimately become a very good player for our team.

My concern is not that his injury is career threatening, but that he has no place in the rotation if we obtain a SF. Since few teams want to trade for a player who has had a stress fracture for 9 months and still isn't healed, we are stuck with a resource we can't use.

Yea, well at least he isn't a Grant Hill contract. That Magic were totally fucked for years over that.

I view Webster as noting but a bonus right now.

The Blazers had a great season without Webster. SF has been mentioned as a postion to improve. Forget the draft, the Blazers are adding a SF to this team who can contribute right away and compete for the starting position. He already knows the offnese, has a few years under his belt and is young.

Better than any draft pick for this team . . .

Martell's career high PER was 11.97. That is 3.3 under the NBA average.

Last year there were 15 rookies that had a better PER rating than Martell's best year out of 3.

It has been reported that he STILL isn't cleared to run, let alone practice. This is either the slowest healing stress fracture in history, or there is something serious going on.
