"Isiah seeks to score Donyell and Jalen for Kurt and Penny"

"Isiah Thomas' month-long pursuit of Donyell Marshall and Jalen Rose has finally reached a point where the Knicks and Raptors are discussing a deal that would send Kurt Thomas and Penny Hardaway to Toronto.

According to a league source, Thomas and Rob Babcock, the Raptors general manager, exchanged phone calls yesterday in an attempt to hammer out a deal that would represent Thomas' first major roster move since he acquired Jamal Crawford from the Bulls in August.

More importantly, the deal would also change the way the Knicks play since Marshall, who would play power forward, is regarded as a perimeter player. The 6-11 Marshall had six 3-pointers in Monday's win over Minnesota and is averaging 10.5 points and 6.8 rebounds in 24.1minutes.

The success of both the Phoenix Suns and Seattle Sonics has apparently encouraged Thomas to adopt a smaller and quicker style. The theory is that if the Knicks can spread the floor with shooters - Crawford, Marshall and Allan Houston - it would maximize Stephon Marbury's ability to penetrate and pass."

hmm. I'm not sure what i think of this trade. It's realistic, it brings the good with the bad.
Thomas gives us a bit more toughness in the post, but like Donyell he's basically gunna be playing out of position center and backup PF since Bosh is the man. Kurt also still has 4 years left on his contract and turns 33 this year. 5 mill next year working up to 8 million in 2007-2008. He would certainly help us defensively and give us that consistent toughness we need.
Penny is a break from Rose contract 1 year earlier, but he cant contribute like Rose can. Then again, we can be rid of Rose who has been a hastle for much of this year with his offensive and defensive(or lack there-of) ways.
    What do you guys think?

damn.. i dont like this trade at all! we trade 2 scorers, end up with toughness, and half a player with 14 mil on his contract [IMG]

I don't know what Babcock's plans are. It could be good or bad.

    2004-2005 Season (This year's)
By trading Jalen and Donyell, we will struggle for the rest of the season. Probably win 30-40% of the rest of our games.

    2005-2006 Season (Next year's)
We will probably also have a difficult time next season, because we won't have cap relief until the next year, and we don't know how our rookies will perform.

Start of 2006-2007 Season (1.5 years from now)
Well depending on how we struggled the last two years, we should have 2-4 good rookies. We also had cap space this summer to sign whoever we want.

Chris has 3 years under his belt at the age of 22. Arujo has 2 years of experience.

So basically what we still would have left

    Skip - 30
    Mo Pete - 29
    Eric Williams - 34
    Bosh - 22 / Kurt Thomas - 34
    Arujo - 26

Which happens to be our current starting line. But in addition to that line we will have
    4 decent - good rookies

plenty of cap space to sign a good player as Hardaway comes off the books with Aaron Williams, Lammond, and Bonner [IMG].

We also get cap space in 2007-2008
as mo pete, eric williams, and zo come off the roster. We might want to resign Mo pete and Eric Williams.
With Zo off the roster and if we don't re-sign both Eric Williams and Mo Pete we could probably sign Magloire.

It would have to be a well-orchestrated rebuilding process, which would guarantee a bright future.

I don't want us to be indecided, trying to make playoffs and coming short. Then getting decent draft picks but not great ones.

    Either we should
    A. Make playoffs
    B. Trade talent for the future.

I think there are probably better trades out there for Jalen and Marshall.

Anyone else sick of these rumors?
    *puts hand up*

Anyone else think that if it aint broke, dont fix it?
    *puts hand up*

why dont they leave the roster alone, make a playoff run with the guys we have now instead of messing up the chemistry again and basically start from scratch???

if they trade, theyre basically tanking this season and start rebuilding again.

Personally, I speak for many Raps fans that are sick and tired of this rebuilding process. We wanna see a playoff run..and soon!!

Earlier in the season, i would've encouraged this trade...but both Donyell's and especially Jalen's play have brought forth a much more balanced and overall BETTER raptors team. Also, even though they have played well, they haven't been hindering Bosh's progress as shown by his 9 consecutive dbl dbls. I agree with the thought that if it aint broke, dont fix it. So far the raps look like a team that will most likely make the playoffs (looking at the schedule) while the Knicks look like a team that's falling apart and are desperately trying to find something to make them better fast.

If this trade goes down, it will be remembered as the stupidest move in franchise history, only second to Grunwald's decision to sign Carter to an extension instead of keeping McGrady. As much as Kurt Thomas can be a presence inside, he's still an undersized power forward at 6'9" and 245 lbs, let alone centre, and I'm not so sure if he would produce coming off the bench. Let's not even go to Penny Hardaway... We talk about Rose's contract, but Penny Hardaway's contract is just a disaster. We'll be paying a guy $14 million a season for 2 years not to see him play. But if this trade were to go down, we will at least need a first rounder from New York.

Actually...... Grunwald tried to sign him to a maxcontract, but T-Mac walked away, cause the CBA before this one didnt have the Restricted FreeAgent crap to keep young players

I know McGrady walked, but he walked away because Carter was there.

but if we signed McGrady instead of Carter, i bet everyone would be calling that the stupidest move in Raptors history, becuase Carter showed so much promise, and remember, he was being labled as the next Jordan at that time

Can we just keep the damn together? Why trade them now, when we are fighting for homecourt and the playoffs?

Whatever man both are gone and Bosh is going to be the franchise player. What I'm trying to say is that this trade will be stupid with the way the things are going with the Raps.

    dear god

we can get WAY more for donyell. WAAAAY more. i hope babs just remains patient, because if he keeps playing the way he is, we're sure to land a much better deal then KT and penny.

we dont really need either of them...donyell is an expiring contract in himself...and KT is another pf...we already got a decent back-up pf.

i hope this is just more new york media rhetoric and BS

i think you guys need to re-look at the situation. With the pieces we have and our inability to win on the road the best we'll be able to manage is fighting for a playoff spot and then dropping out first round in 4 games. I personally dont like the trade because Kurt Thomas contract runs for 4 more years...so he'll be 37 and being paid 8 million.
Also i think we could get more for Marshall.
If they trade Marshall and Rose for cap space, young talent or picks i'll be happy, cause the Raps will get a better pick in the draft.
I think we need to do what New Jersey almost did. Press reset on a mediocore team inorder to better position ourselves for when our star, Bosh, is in his prime.

I agree with all Raptors fans here when I say that.....THIS TRADE STINKS. It can only come from Isiah Thomas and the New York Knicks. They are in more need than the Raptors to dump salary.

The way Babcock deals I know this trade is BS. When the Vince trade went down, no one heard of NJ being in the mix. He keeps his stuff on the DL most of the time so consider this trade Null and void.

I am tired of losing season after season, just try to make the playoffs now and while we have to consider our future but we cant tank our season completely just to get a better draft pick imo. Also, even though Rose cant defend for his life and maybe a distraction at times ...he still can be that go-to guy that we need at the end of games. And i dont think i need to speak of what Marshall has done for us.
