"With the season opener just around the corner, some of the younger Islanders know they'll have to step up offensively because of the injuries suffered by several veterans. The Isles, who open at home Saturday against Dallas, have been decimated by injuries during training camp. Defenseman Mark Streit (shoulder surgery) is out 4-6 months, forward Kyle Okposo (shoulder surgery) will miss two months and wingman Rob Schremp (back strain) could miss four weeks. Those three players were among the team's top 10 scorers last season. Two players who may be able to fill the scoring void are P.A. Parenteau -- who played with the Rangers last season -- and rookie Nino Niederreiter, the Isles' first-round pick in this year's NHL draft. Parenteau's situation is a bit different this season, when he was among the Rangers' final cuts last season and sent down to the AHL. He was called up later in the season when players were hurt, but was sent down to make room once they got healthy. This offseason, Parenteau signed a one-way deal with the Islanders, meaning he will be paid the same amount whether in the NHL or the minor leagues. "It's a different opportunity -- I was filling in for some guys last year. I know I can help this team right off the bat," he said. "I'm looking forward to Saturday night. Hopefully it's going to work out." Parenteau was 3-for-3 in shootouts last year, including two game-winners. But he only scored three goals and had eight points as he appeared in 22 games while his ice time was limited to an average of 13 minutes a game. The ice time, as well as points, should increase significantly. Possibly playing on a line with John Tavares wouldn't hurt either." http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/islanders/isles_eye_parenteau_for_scoring_TRRSoshFPESfLrqus4gbtL
