My Ducks are doing pretty well so far. Biggest get so far has to be 4-star receiver Diante Jackson. I'm holding out hope for Bryce Brown (nation's #1 ranked running back), but it sounds like he may not decide until March. He's down to Oregon and Miami. -Pop
Brown isn't going to commit until March, or so goes the rumor. That could be good news for the Ducks since Miami just signed two 4-star backs today. Bryce Brown could come in and play immediately in Eugene. He'd be a near lock for 1000 yards as a freshman in the Jeremiah Johnson role.
Not a bad list for the Ducks. But I am really curious that they aren't going after better QB's. If I seem to remember correctly the Ducks have had issues with their QB's being injured. A 2-star QB? Come on. http://rivals100.rivals.com/commitlist.asp?Year=2009&School=59
To be honest, they tried. They went after Tajh Boyd (Clemson) and Tate Forcier (Michigan) and missed. But WR and D-Line and the secondary were much bigger needs for the Ducks. They have Jeremiah Masoli (Jr.), Darron Thomas (So.), Chris Harper (So.) and Justin Roper (Jr.) at QB right now. Not to mention they are expecting a healthy Nate Costa back for Spring ball. You never know with injuries, like you say, but I don't think QB is as big of a problem area as you suggest. -Pop
Boyd was the one they really went after, and only because Chip Kelly saw him as a perfect fit for his offense. The roster is loaded with QBs, Darron Thomas will likely be redshirt this year (barring injuries to Masoli/Roper/Costa), and the hunt for an elite spread QB will continue into next spring. Pursuing Boyd was much more about getting his talent than filling a position. I'm not sure the Ducks would have aggressively gone after a QB if a player of Boyd's talent hadn't been available.
Exactly right, and the kid they did get who NateDogg referenced earlier (Daryle Hawkins) is more of an ATH than a QB. He played QB in his senior year, but he has the athleticism and skills to play a couple other positions. My guess is he finds a way on the field, but it will probably be somewhere other than behind center. -Pop
Hmmm ... Rumors now that Tyrece Gaines has decided to hold off until Friday to announce where he's going. Apparently Oklahoma lost out on a top-rated receiver to LSU, so he wants to take a few days to think about it. In other words, he's going to Oklahoma. Oh well. Still a solid recruiting class nonetheless. -Pop
