<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Former Miami Heat Coach Stan Van Gundy was the only other coaching candidate the Magic talked to while they were courting Billy Donovan, who, incredibly is doing an about-face on Orlando after taking the job.

Magic President Bob Vander Weide said that he was impressed with Van Gundy.

Van Gundy told me last week before Donovan accepted the Magic job that he would "love to coach" the club, praising Dwight Howard and the city.

He might get his chance now.

Once the Donovan mess is sorted out --- there's virtually no chance the Magic can change his mind --- look for the club to announce his hiring this week.

The only catch: Van Gundy likely was the lead candidate to get the Sacramento Kings' job.

Stay tuned to As The Magic Turn.</div>

I've been saying we should get him for as long as I can remember. He actually wants to be here too so that's a plus...

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The crazy, turnaround, wacky world of Orlando Magic basketball may be getting closer to a resolution, maybe.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has reported that former Miami Heat Coach Stan Van Gundy is on the verge of being offered the seemingly vacant Magic coaching job.

Van Gundy would not comment on the story and the Sun-Sentinel story did not attribute the speculation to any sources.

It would end a tumultuous few days of speculation and angst, after Gator basketball coach Billy Donovan got cold feet and started to back away from the job.

"It's over," said a source close to the situation said early Monday morning.

Van gundy is the guy I said from the start to get and I believe he is the only coach we can get that can push us through this media tirade but also through the season into the playoffs. Plus he could always get his brother as an assistant!! and who wouldnt want a ron jeremy look alike??

I'm just waiting for the Magic to hire SVG and then 3 days later the Magic find out that Ron Jeremy signed the contract to be our head coach instead. Well at least we would have Jenna Jameson as a "cheerleader". [IMG]

This Donovan situation is freakin' ridiculous. I wouldn't want him back if he changed his mind. The Magic just have some serious bad luck.

Although, I would just as gladly have SVG come here, and if I remember correctly, Van Gundy was on my coaching wish list higher than Donovan anyway. It's just ****** what he did to the Magic organization and their fans. But Stan Van Gundy does seem like our most likely candidate and I'll be glad to have someone who actually wants to coach our team.

I think it's really a blessing in disguise... Stan Van Gundy is a quality, quality head coach. He'd likely have a ring if Pat Riley hadn't have needed his ego boost.

How many wins does a coach need to go from being a quality coach to a quality, quality coach?

Van Gundy Makes Verbal Commitment To Kings, But Magic An Option

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Billy Donovan could return as Florida coach as early as today, but legal issues surrounding the deal he signed with the Orlando Magic could delay the process.

Another issue, according to an NBA source, could center around the status of former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy. Van Gundy, considered the second option behind Donovan to coach the Magic last week, made a verbal commitment to coach the Sacramento Kings after interviewing Saturday, but would reconsider his options if the Magic job reopened.

Orlando would like to have a new coach in place before letting Donovan out of his five-year, $27.5 million contract, according to the source.</div>

Yet another reason why Billy Donovan screwed us. If we don't get SVG, then screw Billy.

Exactly. And what an idea by Van Gundy, making a VERBAL agreement rather than signing a contract.

I'd say seven more wins over his predecessor, three of them coming in games played on the eve of the full moon, one of them played whilst the players are distracted by a space/time wormhole slowly expanding just above the shot clock.

Donovan Almost Out, Van Gundy Almost In (For a Price)

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Magic are close to resolving their coaching fiasco by agreeing to a deal to dismiss Billy Donovan and hire Stan Van Gundy, according to reports Tuesday.

ESPN.com reported Donovan and the team were finalizing an agreement for his departure. Terms would prevent Donovan from coaching in the NBA for five years. The Orlando Sentinel reported that the Magic offered a contract to Van Gundy, a former Heat coach and current adviser in Miami.

The Magic might have to compensate the Heat with money or a draft pick because Van Gundy is still under contract through June 30, 2008. Miami only has a first-round pick, No. 20 overall, in this year's draft, while Orlando currently has a first-rounder and three second-round selections.</div>

I really hate the idea of losing a draft pick for Van Gundy just because he's still under contract in Miami. Hopefully we can just give them some money and that will work things out. After all, we have a lot of cash lying around now that we don't owe Billy tons of money. I like Stan Van Gundy and I love this move. This whole situation may turn out to be a blessing in disguise when all is said and done.

Maybe we can force Billy to pay the money that we have to pay for SVG.

There was a legal expert on a local sports radio show and he was saying that, if the Magic paid him his full contract, they could prevent him from coaching anywhere (Florida included). I know that doesn't accomplish anything, but how cool would it be to see that happen? Orlando would have to have a major vindictive streak to pull that one off though.

    Where's Stan?

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">

    Where's Stan the Man?

    Does he know the plan?

Stan was curiously out of pocket Wednesday morning, he and his wife apparently on a "trip."

A trip to Orlando, where he will become the Magic coach?

A trip to Sacramento, where he will take the Kings' job?

A trip to The Bahamas, where he might be taking a vacation?

    Beats me.

If Van Gundy is off to Sacramento, it likely means the Magic lost another coach in this Billy Donovan saga and will go to plan C. It might mean that Pat Riley, the Miami Heat coach and team president, wanted too much in compensation for Van Gundy and the Magic said forget it.

If Van Gundy is off to Orlando, well, at least the Magic got their runnerup choice to Backin' Out Billy.

And if Stan is in The Bahamas, with one of those jobs in his pocket, I'm extremely jealous.</div>

Magic to announce contract settlement with Donovan

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Orlando Magic are expected today to announce they have reached a contract settlement with Billy Donovan, but might wait a few days to introduce his replacement. They have offered former Miami Heat Coach Stan Van Gundy a contract.

The Magic were expected to release a statement and are planning a news conference at RDV Sportsplex for later in the day with General Manager Otis Smith, but only to discuss the disolution of Donovan's contract.

Click here to find out more!
Legal representatives for the club and Donovan worked late Tuesday into finalizing the deal. One of the stipulations agreed upon by both parties is that neither publicly discuss the particulars.

But those close to the situation have told the Sentinel that a non-compete clause in the agreement would prohibit Donovan from coaching in the NBA for five years, the length of the original contract. If Donovan wanted to accept an NBA job before the duration of the non-compete expires, he would have a legal fight on his hands with the Magic.

After officially parting with Donovan --- who asked to be released from his Magic contract less than a half day after signing it last Friday ---- the Magic are expected to name Van Gundy as their coach.

But the club might wait a few more days to introduce Van Gundy, allowing the Donovan controversy to die down .

The Magic apparently have worked through some compensation issues with the Miami Heat, who still have Van Gundy under contract for another year as a consultant. It was reported by the Sentinel that the Heat perhaps wanted a draft choice or choices from the Magic.

The Magic have just three second-round picks in the June 28 draft. The Heat do not have any second-round picks.</div>
