It's the final countdown for Birk

Proving his true Nordic manliness by standing in 24-degree weather wearing just a t-shirt, Matt Birk told the Baltimore Sun that his trip to visit with the Baltimore Ravens wasn't just to gain leverage over the Minnesota Vikings, a la Kurt Warner's recent San Fran excursion. "I wouldn't be here if I didn't think it was a strong possibility," Birk said to a group bewildered by his reluctance to wear a coat.

The Ravens are in dire straits regarding the center position at the moment, with backup Chris Chester largely untested, and right guard Marshal Yanda situated as the only other O-Lineman who has performed the snapping motion in practice or a game with the team. With John Sullivan waiting in the wings, the Vikings would appear to be in better shape, although it would be quite unnerving for denizens of the Viking Nation to see Birk, a St. Paul native, line up for any other team.

An interesting wrinkle to the Birk situation is that both he and Ravens quarterbacking prodigy Joe Flacco have the same agent, Joe Linta. While all parties have publicly denied that this will have bearing on the negotations, most of us in the real world understand that Linta would much prefer having a Pro Bowler protecting his investment than one of the two guys slated to line up at center if Birk declines the Ravens' offer.

No matter which purple jersey Birk chooses, a decision is likely to be made by this weekend.
