Jags the first contestant on the Price is Right (for Holt)

After Torry Holt was released by the St. Louis Rams earlier this month, he took some "me time", electing to spend a vacation outside the country. Refreshed and refocused after this time away, Holt will now begin the process of figuring out which jersey he'll wear in 2009.

According to the St. Louis Dispatch, Holt will begin his tour of suitors by visiting the Jacksonville Jaguars today. While much of the known world thinks that the Jags will be using the eighth overall pick on a wide receiver like Michael Crabtree or Jeremy Maclin in next month's draft, it would behoove them greatly to bring in a veteran leader like Holt. Holt has had scant on- or off-field issues, a fact that makes him more an exception to the rule amongst this era's NFL wide receivers. Moreover, in spite of all the great things being said about Crabtree, Maclin and the rest of this rookie receiving class, it's very rare that a rookie wide receiver can come in and be a difference-maker in their initial campaign. Holt would be able to mentor one of these youngsters, as well as provide a reliable target for David Garrard, something that was unavailable throughout 2008.

If Holt emerges from his visit without having signed a contract with the Jags, it's very likely he'll make his next visit to the Tennessee Titans. Unlike their AFC South rivals, the Titans are not completely in dire straits when it comes to their receiving corps, having added Nate Washington via free agency earlier this month. On the other hand, in the days following Holt's official release, it became public knowledge that the Titans had come very close to landing Holt in a trade, only to be left at the altar due to specifics regarding a new contract for the receiver. With this in mind, Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt might have a better figure in mind should Holt come calling.

After the trip through the AFC South, it's expected that Holt may also pay a visit to the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners have added former Titan Brandon Jones in free agency, and await word from Isaac Bruce on his decision to play another season, but Holt would be a difference-maker for the team. Although coach Mike Singletary has repeatedly stated that the Niners' 2009 offense will be run-heavy, it would be nice to see Holt and Bruce buzzing around the defensive secondary, no matter who is throwing the ball.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have wasted many a draft pick and dollar of late in search of a quality wideout.

In 2004, a top-ten pick was devoted to receiver Reggie Williams. The following year, the Jags pulled a page from the Lions’ draft book and picked another one, Matt Jones. A fourth-rounder from 2004, Ernest Wilford, arguably was better than either of them. Last year, the Jaguars gave a big-money contract to free-agent Jerry Porter.

None of these players remain on the roster.

(Against this background, it probably makes sense that former Jacksonville V.P. of football operations James “Shack” Harris was hired by Detroit.)

But there’s hope in Jacksonville. They’re getting the first crack at veteran wideout Torry Holt, who was cut by the Rams earlier this month before earning a $1.25 million roster bonus.

According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Holt will visit the Jaguars on Thursday.

Other teams that have shown interest in Holt include the Titans.
