"Jamaal Charles wanted the instant validation that only a big game could provide. He had signed a five-year contract extension the day before and believed a signature game Sunday against the Chargers was the proper way to thank the Chiefs and general manager Scott Pioli for their faith in him.

Instead, Charles, the NFL's third-leading rusher heading into the game, had his lowest rushing output of the season. He rushed for just 40 yards as the Chiefs fell to the Chargers 31-0.

Neither of those facts rested well with him afterward.

"It was an embarrassing day for me," he said, his voice rising slightly from its normal placid tone. "I signed the contract, and then I didn't come through for the people I'm supposed to come through for. It was embarrassing. I didn't do (well) enough."

It was a dismal game for the entire Chiefs offense. Kansas City had just 67 yards of total offense. Quarterback Brodie Croyle, filling in for the ailing Matt Cassel, completed just seven passes for 40 yards and was sacked four times.

"I felt good about the plan," Croyle said. "I felt good about preparation coming in. We just came out here, and we did not perform the way we thought we would."

Charles and Croyle were not the only Chiefs skill players to have a miserable game. Thomas Jones had just three carries and gained only 1 yard. Dwayne Bowe caught just one of the seven passes thrown his way. Dexter McCluster failed to touch the ball on offense for the first time.

"You never know about the game plan," McCluster said about his inactivity."
