QUOTE

ALAMEDA — The oversized gift Raiders fans received in the form of quarterback JaMarcus Russell via the NFL draft last April finally might be unveiled and paraded around in front of the home folk Sunday.

Who says Christmas doesn't come early?

Well, don't get your silver-and-black Christmas stockings in a bunch just yet. Nothing is official. It's just that Russell making his NFL debut is as close to reality as it has been at any point since he was added to the 53-man roster before Oakland's fourth game.

It's nothing that Russell has done in recent days that broughtabout the prospect of his debut materializing. It has everything to do with injuries to Daunte Culpepper and Josh McCown.

Culpepper arrived at the team facility Thursday morning and complained of a sore right quadriceps. He said he sustained the injury in Oakland's game against the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday but didn't feel the full effects until after practice Wednesday.

"I tried to ice it (Wednesday) night, and it was sore," Culpepper said. "I kind of cut back on my reps (Wednesday) because I didn't want to make it any worse than it is."

McCown sustained a dislocated left pinkie finger in practice Wednesday. His injury wasn't disclosed by Raiders coach Lane Kiffin on Wednesday or Thursday and was unearthed only when McCown entered the locker room with ice on his left hand.

What Kiffin did say Wednesday provided scant insight into how things will unfold Sunday.

I believe that if Culpepper can move around at all, he'll start. Would I be surprised to see Jamarcus ? No.

    Not at this point.
