Here's Jay Glazer. Mortensen says "multiple draft picks", however. Man, the Redskins don't waste time. Daniels got hurt and in a matter of a few hours Taylor was on his way to DC.
Decent deal, given that Miami is a rebuilding organization and Taylor was getting up there in age. I still don't think Parcells was very mature either way.
Good deal, but the Skins still aren't better than the Eagles, Cowboys, or Giants. They'll still finish last in the division
What the hell is the point of this deal for the Redskins? Oh, they're required to be consistent in giving up draft picks for over the hill stars.
http://sportstwo.com/NFL/Story/NFL/2662428 Redskins acquire DE Taylor from Dolphins Sunday, July 20, 2008 08:44 PM ASHBURN, Virginia (Ticker) - Jason Taylor will be dancing with the ... Washington Redskins. The Redskins on Sunday acquired Taylor from the Miami Dolphins for a pair of draft choices, making the move just hours after a season-ending injury claimed incumbent starter Phillip Daniels. Washington shipped its second-round pick in 2009 and sixth-round selection in 2010 for Taylor, a six-time Pro Bowl defensive end and the league's Defensive Player of the Year in 2006. "We acquired a perennial Pro Bowl player and one of the NFL's top pass rushers," Redskins executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said. "He is a great leader who will fit in very well with our team. We feel that Jason is a great addition on the field as well as off the field. " Taylor will fill a void left by the knee injury to Daniels, who was hurt in the team's first practice session on Sunday morning. Daniels' backup, Alex Buzbee, suffered a ruptured Achilles on the first day of training camp and also is lost for the season. "His statistics back up everything that he has done," Cerrato said. "I think one of the more impressive accomplishments is that he has played over 90 percent of his possible playing time every year. We had to act after losing our starting defensive end Phillip Daniels. "We are fortunate that there was a guy of his caliber on the market, especially after when one of our players got hurt. Normally, there is nobody on the market of his caliber. ... The timing was right." Cerrato told the Washington Post that the Redskins will assume the final two years of Taylor's contract and will not re-negotiate the deal. Taylor previously had said he planned to play just one more season, but Cerrato said he does not expect that to be the case. "I am 100 percent confident he will play for more than one year," Cerrato said. Taylor has not missed a game in the past eight seasons, accumulating 100 1/2 of his 117 career sacks in that span, including 11 in 2007. "He is a playmaker who can do so many different things for us on defense," Cerrato said. Taylor, who has made four consecutive Pro Bowl appearances, had been rumored to be on the trading block since Bill Parcells was named the Dolphins' head of football operations in late December. Parcells shopped the 12-year veteran prior to the NFL draft, but no team was willing to meet his reported asking price of a first-round pick. Taylor drew the ire of Dolphins management by failing to attend any of the team's offseason activities, spending the bulk of his time preparing for his appearances on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars."
the Dolphins get significant value, JT goes to a team that thinks its a contender....now JT and Zach are rivals on the field....
I'm torn in what to think about this deal. On the one hand, it improves the Redskins defense pretty significantly. Taylor over Daniels is a significant upgrade in talent. But it came at a pretty steep cost; a 2nd and future 6th. If I thought the Redskins were title contenders this season, I'd think of it as a good move. But I don't think they are. Not with a new head coach installing a new offensive system that relies on quick reads/accuracy with a QB who is not known for either. I think a move like this would have made more sense for, say, Jacksonville.
I'm surprised Minnesota did match that low asking price. A Defense with the Williams' Wall and Allen & JT flanking is down right scary. And with JT wanting to go to a winning team...'Sota is built to win soon!
I agree w/ Vintage that J'ville made more sense. Well, until Daniels went down. I, personally, am not sorry to see 99 go. I was able to see the game against the Raiders and another can't recall who Miami was playing but JT both times looked liked he was mailing it in. I've said before and will say again that Parcells and Co got rid of the wrong brother-in-law.... I'm going to miss Zach in A & O more than Jason. Is Gregg Williams still the Skins DC? If so, JT should do well.
Actually, Gregg Williams is Jax's DC, lol. I believe Blache is the Skins DC.... supposedly, he is similar to Williams, but I don't know much about him. We'll see. If Taylor ends up playing for a couple of more years, its a solid investment (if they can contend during that time). Otherwise, I question it some. Wish Parcells and co. had coaxed a 1st rounder out of them though....
Blatche was the Bears DC under Dick Jauron. He generally seemed pretty good to me, although he's a bit on the intense side.
