With the Cardinals need for a left-handed bat to come off their bench, a strong spring training by Jon Jay could have landed him a spot on the Opening Day roster.

But Jay hit just .231 (9-for-39) with eight strikeouts in spring training, looked uncomfortable at times defensively and was optioned to Triple A Memphis to start the year.

All he did at Memphis was open the season with a 16-game hitting streak, failing to get a hit for the first time all year in his final game on Sunday before being notified of his promotion.

It may be three weeks later than he originally hoped, but Jay is right where he hoped to be – in the major leagues.

“It was disappointing but I knew it was only the beginning of the season,” Jay said. “The ultimate goal was to be there at the end, hopefully on that playoff roster. So I knew I was kind of on a mission in Triple A to kind of get myself together and get myself going.

“I knew it wasn’t the end of the world.”
