...But for anyone looking for a solid starting pitcher to round out a rotation, forget about it. Which is why the Jays and others might have to turn back to the good, old-fashioned art of the deal at the winter meetings in Nashville, Tenn., Dec. 2 to 6.

Sure, there are pitchers among the 28 starters available in whom the Jays have had prior interest. But that was then and this is now.

Three years ago, the Jays put a full-court press on right-hander Matt Clement after he became a free agent the first time. The 33-year-old opted instead to sign a three-year deal with the Red Sox, citing tradition and ambience.

He could be worth a gamble. Clement has not pitched in a game since June 14, 2006, and he had arthroscopic shoulder surgery by Dr. James Andrews that September to repair some tears.

With his friend Brad Arnsberg still the Jays pitching coach, Clement might be the kind of player GM J.P. Ricciardi could take a chance on next spring, with an invitation to major-league training camp. There would be a comfort level with his friend and mentor nearby.

Ricciardi was interested in Kenny Rogers for a one-year deal a few years ago when he became free from the Twins. The Jays could use an experienced left-hander in the rotation, but with Scott Boras as his agent, he might price himself right out of Toronto's range.

Kenny Rogers, he would be awesome. A solid lefty, great pick-up if we got him.

Rogers made five starts in September after coming back from an injury. He was 0-2, in 30 innings allowing 12 runs. I don't think he's worth too much and doubt he's interested in playing here but I think JP should at least check it out.

I think his price will be way too high for us... especially with Boras as his agent. We should focus on the young guns we currently have and make sure they develope into everything they should!!
