Deal likely ends Ostertag's stint on Utah roster

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">One Jazz big man will be back, and another one should be preparing to pack.
The Jazz have come to terms on a multi-year deal with Jarron Collins, and will sign the 6-foot-11 forward-center on Tuesday, basketball operations senior vice president Kevin O'Connor said Saturday night.
By extension: Veteran center Greg Ostertag's career in Utah seemingly will come to a close with nine seasons in the books.
"It's probably gonna be difficult for us to re-sign Greg," O'Connor said.
"I think Greg, obviously, has some people (other teams) that are looking at him, and I think he continues to want to explore what's out there," he added. "And we got in a position to where we wanted to get another big guy, and he (Ostertag) wasn't ready to make a decision."</div>

I didn't read where it said the amount. All I saw was that they have 4.6 million left in cap room. Does anyone know if he got all of it? I think that'd be a mockery if he got that much. He's a great backup Center, but he's only worth about 1-2 million dollars a year.

Since this sums up the Jazz's stint on Free Agency, what does everyone think of the job they did? I think they underachieved. Boozer is not going to be nearly as effective in the West; he's too undersized. Okur is a decent Center, as a backup. He's not 50 million dollar player though. I know a lot of players are reluctant to play in Utah, but I don't think the Barry's would have minded. I wonder why they didn't make a run at Brent Barry. The could have also made a solid run at Ginobili, Turkoglu, Richardson, and S.Jackson. I just didn't like that they did with all that cap space.

They're obviously desperate for success in the free agent market, especially after last year's failure to bring in any big-name FA's. They pounced on any FA that showed interest this offseason, and overpaid them in the process. As Voodoo Child stated, both Boozer and Okur would not be decent players in the West, and I wouldn't expect the Jazz to get a playoff spot next year, although the Jazz has a long history of overachieving.

This guy is a lot better than his brother IMO, Jason Collins cant do anything but this guy on the other hand I really like. Ostertag isnt good so we need someone to be good as a back up and Collins would do just that.

I think the Jazz did a real good job of picking talent in the Free Agent Market. The Jazz went with good young talent. Instead of signing someone to a long term contract in their 30's (Brent Barry, Steve Nash, etc.), they went young and for what they needed, BIG MEN. Steve Nash is going to be 38, I believe, when his contract with the Suns run out, I only know of one Point Guard ever who deserved a large contract at 38. Where as when Boozer's contract runs out he will be 28. Also, the Jazz's oldest player undercontract is Matt Harpring, 28, the Jazz are looking to the future while staying competitive now.

On the topic why the Jazz didn't make a serious run Hedo Turkoglu, Stephen Jackson, Manu Ginobilli, or Quentin Richardson. One, we are stacked at those positions and two, Manu was the only one who would really fit under our system and he came and visited the Jazz but chose the Spurs.

When I add the Jazz Draft Picks, I give the Jazz an A so far on the off-season.

They've got 4.6 million left after signing Collins, and will probably use that on restricted free agent Mo Williams. Although they've already given him a qualifying offer but I'm not sure for how much. If they've still got any money left, they might sign Mikki Moore, and put him on the IL (because it should be only be a matter of time before Borchardt goes down). They will try to save as much as possible, to give AK47 the max next offseason.

As for the cap space, only time will tell. So far I thought they did well compared to other teams FA signings, but Okur and Boozer may struggle in the West and be a big waste a cap room. However there's a good chance they will succeed, especially Boozer.

As for the Barry's they dont need any more guards. They expected to have Arroyo, Lopez and Williams at PG. Giricek, Bell and Snyder at SG to start the 04-05 season. They adressed their needs, PF and C. With those two signings, Utah are set for next season.
