Jeff Pendergraph is changing his last name to Ayres as he begins a two-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs. Ayres is the family name of his biological father. Ayres had taken the surname of a stepfather who hasn't been in his life since he was in high school. “I didn't know who my dad was until I was a senior in high school,” Jeff Ayres said Wednesday. Ayres was born Jeff Orcutt, using the maiden name of his mother. Not knowing who his biological father was, Ayres dreamed he was someone famous such as Denzel Washington or Shaquille O'Neal. “It turns out it was a mechanic named James,” Ayres said.
