It doesn't matter that former Norte Dame football star Jeff Samardzija has not even seen the university's new uniforms and helmets; he already knows he doesn't like them.

After pitching for the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, the former two-sport star in South Bend, Ind., was asked of his thoughts on the new uniforms the football team will wear in a game at Chicago's Soldier Field in October against Miami.

Samardzija, a receiver for the Irish from 2003-06, claimed he hasn't seen them, but it didn't prevent him from commenting.

"Well, it seems to be the thing these days for recruiting, huh?" said Samardzija, who had a school-record 179 receptions at Notre Dame with 2,593 receiving yards and 27 receiving touchdowns. "See how much confetti and hoopla you can put out there to get guys to come to your school. You'd think playing on TV every Saturday would be enough."

Instead of the simple gold pants, navy jerseys with white numerals and solid gold helmets, for one game anyway, the Fighting Irish will wear a flashier getup with navy and white stripes down the side of the pants, metallic numbers and a navy and gold helmet with a leprechaun on it.
