Jerry jones: ‘terrell should put me on the top of the list”

Dallas Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones has no intentions of bad-mouthing former Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens, who’s currently visiting the Buffalo Bills.

In an interview with Scott Hanson of NFL Network, Jones said that when Owens talks with other NFL teams: “He should put me on the top of the list with his resume to talk about Terrell in a positive way.”

Explaining his decision to cut ties with Owens, Jones said it had more to do with a desire to highlight Roy Williams as the featured wide receiver. He emphasized that the move wasn’t prompted by Owens’ attitude.

“I think that’s the easy place to go because of his personality and because of his visibility, but that’s too easy,” Jones said. “If it had been that easy, that would have been the decision I might have made 60 days ago, 90 days ago. That’s not a part of why I ultimately made the decision.

“In this particular case, we have an outstanding player in Roy Williams and it was a significant factor in the decision I made to release Terrell. To have everything Roy has a chance to be, we think this is the best way to do it. I look at this more as a strategic move relative to personnel for the Dallas Cowboys, than something wrong with Terrell Owens. That’s not the case.”

Jones said that Owens seemed to be caught off-guard by the decision to release him.

“In this particular case, there’s no way I would make this decision and not meet face to face with him,” Jones said. “We have had from my standpoint a really top professional relationship. We’ve always been very candid with each other.

“First of all, he was very surprised and I understand why. I know he certainly did not expect it. I did go to him and immediately came to the conclusion we would be moving on.”

According to Jones, Owens wasn’t angered by the news that the Cowboys were dismissing him.

“No, I wouldn’t have expected that,” Jones said. “It was one of surprise. I don’t know that angry would be the word. I’m sure, knowing his personality, I’m sure it was disappointing. It was disappointing to me.”

Jones denied that quarterback Tony Romo played any role in recommending Owens’ departure.

“None, none whatsoever,” Jones said. “In speaking with Tony, his input was more about the overall team. I’ve never had him a position where he’s critiquing his teammates.”

Plus, Jones said he’s not concerned that Owens’ exit could cause a backlash in the locker room from players who gravitated toward the outspoken wide receiver.

“Well, I think Terrell is a natural leader,” Jones said. “He has that kind of charisma and walks the talk, so to speak. He is very much a dedicated, hard worker in this business that’s very physical and calls you to do things that aren’t natural.

“He is a leader, but our team, the players that respect his pluses that are there, understand we all have to be ready as a team to move on.”
