Jessica Simpson Stands Up For Her Man

Finally, we have a little Tony Romo common sense ... and from Jessica Simpson no less.

Appearing on the Late Show With David Letterman on Thursday, ostensibly to promote her new country album Do You Know, Tony’s famous girlfriend ended up dissecting all things Dallas Cowboys and mostly Cowboys quarterbacking.

And while it wasn’t Madden on the Telestrator, the girl brought some football sense to what has become a nonsensical debate that goes something like Romo has to prove he can win when it matters, like immediately, this year, or risk being labeled overrated. And nothing that happens this season apparently counts because the many questions about him all need playoff answering.

This deep thinking was brought to you by many national types and a few locals and was debunked rather succinctly by the woman who once infamously asked "is it chicken or is it tuna?"

"Tony always performs well," Jess replied when Letterman asked about this whole Cowboys jinx brouhaha.

Or maybe it was in response to one of his 20 Romo questions Letterman asked before letting her sing. I just remember thinking, yeah, what she said.

Romo is the second-best quarterback in the NFL at the moment, with Tom Brady a nonfactor because of injury. Peyton Manning then Romo, with Favre and various others in that conversation.

What is not really all that debatable is whether Romo belongs.

Ask yourself which of Romo’s games in his not-yet two NFL seasons as a starter have provoked a "I just do not know if he has what it takes?" reaction. Like Titans types happen to be doing right now about once-wunderkind Vince Young.

Of course, the answer is zero times in Romo’s case. If anything, he has outperformed expectations with no indications he has reached any kind of ceiling.

So enough with this idea that Romo has this season to prove himself worthy or risk is ridiculous. He’s 28 and pretty dang good. And enough with pretending what he does over the next 15 games is somehow irrelevant.

Anybody paying any kind of attention this season is going to find hints everywhere as to what we may see from him come playoff time.

Just look at Week 1, when Romo had Browns linebacker Willie McGinest crashing into his chin with his helmet and seconds later finds both McGinest and bordering-on-morbidly-obese defensive tackle Shaun Rogers lying on him.

Romo stayed down for a couple of seconds, which probably felt like 12 years to Coach Wade and almost assuredly took at least 12 months off of his life. Even after slowly getting up, Romo looked not himself.

Blood dripping.

Kind of walking funny.

Obviously in pain.

And in this moment, he did not flee to the comforts of the sideline but rather hung in the pocket and found Jason Witten for a 19-yard completion. He finishes the drive and the game. So what was going through his mind?

Was he thinking: "I’m going to show everybody I am tough"?

"You don’t think that. You think, 'I’m not hurt enough to leave the game,’ " Romo said. "If I can see and I’m not physically unable to walk, you feel like you can go play. It’s more fun to play than not play. So you play."

The kid was not trying to show how tough he is. He is tough and it showed. I’d say this is an important lesson to learn about a quarterback.

One of the Parcells rules — which virtually everybody ignores in favor of the sexier "don’t be a celebrity quarterback" — is the guy has to be tough. Physically. And mentally.

This has become a huge talking point this week with all of this Vince Young craziness. I am not yet ready to dog-pile and join everybody else in saying VY lacks that certain something necessary for QBs in the NFL. I do not think anybody is asking anything close to that about Romo, with whom a Super Bowl seems to be a matter of when.

We learn why a little bit more every time he plays. His willingness to acknowledge weaknesses and work on them. How he has improved almost weekly and now his toughness which, of course, he downplayed.

"I had no idea what was going on. I just threw a ball," Romo said. "I don’t put much stock into it."

This is so typical Tony, who loves to downplay everything from winning a big game to his really awesome random act of kindness of stopping to help that couple change a flat tire after Sunday’s game, with bandage still on his stitch-needing chin.

Which is why Jess was so refreshing on Letterman.

Yes, there were some "wait, what did she say?" answers. Especially on matters of football undergarments and pink vs. blue jerseys and kissing with your mouth full. On Romo, though, Jess provided much needed common sense.

Anybody unsure of what Romo is likely to bring in January simply has not been paying attention.
