isn't the more educated guess that it's the last leader of the Templars' burial shroud, which coincides with the early-14th-century dating on it? Do the talk about that at the exhibit?
okay, so supposedly jesus was covered with this cloth when he died. and somehow he used his super powers to leave the impression of his face, OR it was just joe-shmoe and if the cloth is a little wet with common items it will leave the negative image of anyone even without raptor jesus powers!
I'll try to find the book I read it in, but it was something like this: On the original Friday the 13th (1307, iirc) the Pope had set it up so that all the Knights Templar would be killed same time, same day, so he could take their amassed treasure without them being able to gang up and fight back. The leader, Jacques de Molay, was imprisoned and tortured for years. He supposedly was beaten and flogged multiple times, the last of which happened in 1314 after he retracted his confession and before he was burned at the stake. For a couple of days, he was near-death and wrapped naked in the shroud, which (due to some chemistry dealing with would suppuration, sweat and other bodily fluids) left stains on the sheet covering him. When he was burned at the stake it was with his friend Geoffroi. Amazingly enough, Geoffroi's widow is one of the first reliable owners in the provenance chain of the Shroud. And when it was carbon-dated, supposedly it only went back to the early 1300's, not 2000 years like you'd think if it was Jesus. BTW, are you in Turin, El Pres? Or is the Shroud traveling now?
