Jets’ “furloughs” draw criticism

The New York Jets’ decision to essentially give two weeks of unpaid vacations to office workers, a move termed as furloughs, while simultaneously breaking out the checkbook on expensive free agents like $48 million linebacker Bart Scott has Steve Politi of the Newark Star-Ledger fired up.

He poses the question of whether the football team was “on a furlough when they gagged away a playoff spot” during a late-season swoon.

Ouch.

Meanwhile, the Jets and the New York Giants are spending $1.6 billion between them to build a brand-new stadium. And, now, the Jets are holding back money from 60 employees.

Of course, fielding a competitive football team is going to take precedence over the finances of the behind-the-scenes folks.

“We’re all here for the same reason: The object of the exercise is to win football games,” Jets executive vice president of business operations Matt Higgins said. “People understand that, first and foremost, if you’re not a competitive team that affects everything else.”

Just for the record, Higgins is taking a furlough, too.

Meanwhile, the Jets spent $75 million on their team headquarters, which includes the improvements of an 11,000-square foot weight room and gigantic flat-screen televisions.

“In a business sense, I’m sure they’ll say they have a budget for office and a budget for the team,” former CBS executive Rick Gentile said. ”Nevertheless, it is outrageous.”
