"When Miami fired special teams coordinator John Bonamego after his unit's disastrous performance Monday night, the Jets' guru at that position -- Mike Westhoff -- said he was "disappointed."

He said Bonamego is "not my best buddy" but reached out to him after the move was made.

"Because I'm the guy to do it," Westhoff explained. "I've been around the longest. I think I know enough that I can talk from experience on both sides of it, having good days and bad days, to be able to give him what he should do and look forward to in the future."

Westhoff said he did not give Bonamego a pep talk, or weigh in on whether the decision is right or wrong, because he said that's not his place. But he wanted to let his fellow coach know that a lot of people have been in his position.

"I know he appreciated it," Westhoff added.

Miami lost 41-14 Monday night after the Patriots blocked a punt and a field goal and returned a kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown. Westhoff said the punt block New England used was identical to the one they executed against the Dolphins in Week 3, just on the other side."
