Jets sign larry izzo

Eric Mangini may be long gone, but the Jets remain a landing spot for wayward Patriots. The team announced on Wednesday afternoon that it signed special teams ace Larry Izzo.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to play for the Jets and Mr. [Woody] Johnson,” Izzo said in a release sent out by the team. “I’m grateful for the chance to be reunited with Coach [Mike] Westhoff, who played a key role early in my career, and I look forward to playing for Coach [Rex] Ryan as he brings his passionate, physical style of football to New York.”

Izzo has spent the last eight seasons with the Patriots, winning three Super Bowl rings and making three Pro Bowls as a special teams player in the process. According to Stats Inc., his 199 special teams tackles are the most of any player since they started tracking the statistic in 1994.

Before joining the Patriots, Izzo, who has missed just one game since 1999, spent five seasons playing for Westhoff in Miami. Both men left the Dolphins before the 2001 season.
