Jets’ Washington Hopeful Of Getting A New Deal

New York Jets all-purpose running back Leon Washington is looking for a new contract, and he isn’t above an ambitious bit of self-promotion in pursuit of that goal.

According to Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News, Washington said he wants to “revolutionize” football. He invoked the name of Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers while discussing his multi-dimensional role.

The former Florida State standout recently hired agent Alvin Keels to represent him, per Dan Leberfeld of Jets Confidential.

“The Jets traditionally have done the right thing with guys that play well for the organization,” Washington said. “I put the work in and, hopefully, it pays off for me sooner rather than later. I wouldn’t say ‘confident.’ I guess I’m hopeful. I guess that would be the word.”

According to NFL.com, Washington rushed for 448 yards and six touchdowns last season, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. He also caught 47 passes for 355 yards and two touchdowns.

Plus, Washington is a dangerous return man who returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown last season.

“I don’t want to label myself as a specific guy,” Washington said. “I’m trying to revolutionize the game, trying to take it to the next level like the guys back in the day, like a Dave Meggett, Gale Sayers, guys that did so much and did it so well.

“I want to bring that style of football back at a high level. In my opinion, that, plus the leadership you have in the locker room, is priceless.”
