Free-agent designated hitter Jim Thome and the Minnesota Twins have agreed to a one-year contract worth $3 million. The deal, announced Friday by the Twins, includes performance bonuses for plate appearances. The Texas Rangers also were interested in Thome, who spent last season in Minnesota after signing a one-year, $1.5 million contract last February. He spent most of his time with the Twins as the DH, hitting .283 with 25 homers and 59 RBIs in 276 at-bats. He ranks eighth on the all-time list with 589 homers. Thome doesn't play in the field anymore, but he gave the AL Central champion Twins a big lift, particularly after first baseman Justin Morneau's concussion created an everyday spot in the lineup.
