Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher has missed practice recently as he and his wife help their 5-year-old son battle a serious health issue they did not disclose.

Fisher, entering his second season as the successor to longtime Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden, released a statement Friday requesting "your prayers as our family is dealing with a very personal matter concerning the health of our youngest child."

Fisher was absent from Florida State's practice Tuesday and could miss more spring practices to help his son, Ethan.

"We ask that you please respect our privacy as we deal with this as a family," Fisher said in the news release. "We will rely on our faith, our immediate family as well as the entire Seminole family as we face these challenges in the coming months.

"With the right medical care and the proper optimistic approach, we are confident of positive results."
