Fighting for a playoff spot, the New York Islanders could ill afford to waste a two-goal lead to start a crucial four-game trip.

Thanks to John Tavares, they didn't. Tavares broke a tie with 5:18 left to help the Islanders beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Tuesday night.
