So here is an announcement that hardly makes sense:

DFW just made the Penn/Fitch fight at UFC 127 a #1 contender battle.

    Um.

Ok so this makes sense if Jake Shields upsets GSP. Except if GSP wins and vacates the title, how can there be a #1 contender to a vacant title?

So Penn/Fitch would likely fight... who?

I think you missed the small print

"DFW: The winner of Penn vs Fitch will be the #1 contender" ....[the fine print] unless Fitch wins, then we'll think of something else :D

    ^ LOL!

Winner gets to accuse GSP of ducking him for moving up in weight.

But seriously if these guys are 1 and 2, who's 3? Thiago Alves? Carlos Condit?

does it matter? whomever it is they've most likely lost to GSP or someone GSP crushed.

    Prolly.

Sounds ripe for a welterweight tournament.

well, does Condit have time to come back from his injury, win a match and put himself in the conversation? cause I can't think of a lot of fresh faces to challenge for the title. If Fitch wins, he's already beaten Alves and Paulo Thiago, a couple of top WW welterweights..He's not gonna fight Kos so thats another top guy down. I dunno if Shields would be getting two title shots in a row. Maybe Martin Kampmann? he'll probably gonna have to win one or two before he gets a crack.
